Will never understand the Russians. When people are on the news across the world being shot they're not interested. When it doesn't quite go their way invasion commences.

All from Putin, a man who changed the law to get a second term in charge. Democracy?
Will never happen but I'd like to see the Russians have their ass handed to them

blimey Putin is jumping the gun a bit

if he had just let Ukraine get sorted id imagine people in the Crimea would maybe vote to go separate / join Russia anyway - taking it by force is not cool

The problem is the new Ukrainian government has publicly denounced Crimea's authority to hold it's independence referendum and made it clear it wont let it go without a fight.

(For reference the law is on Crimea's side).

It's a sad situation but I am amused by everyone in this thread yesterday insisting it wasn't the Russian military at the airport and Crimean parliament buildings. They seem quiet today.

"The Budapest Memorandum of 1994,which was signed by Bill Clinton, John Major, Boris Yeltsin, en Leonid Kuchman. Requires the United States and the United Kingdom to assist and defend Ukraine Sovereignty if the Country is invaded by Russia. As Russia has invaded Ukraine, the United States and United Kingdom are now in a de facto war with Russia.
Big play being made about this in Kiev"

Just saw this on a comments section in the guardian, this sounds like it could drag us all into it, if indeed this treaty means we are compelled to assist. Hopefully it's just Russian posturing and Putin trying to prove he's not gay

Edit: seems legit as well http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Ukraine._Memorandum_on_Security_Assurances

That has been consistently quoted all about the net however it is false. The Budapest Memorandum of 1994 requires that the UK and the US defends Ukraine in the event it is under attack via nuclear missiles, there is no requirement for us to defend Ukraine for any other reason then nuclear warfare.

Yeah just read the exact treaty only nuclear war lol

pardon my dumbness but how do you defend against at minimum 250 warheads falling from above your head, if they land there will be nothing left to defend i thought.

it would require the UK/US to fire back in retaliation just as though the nukes aimed at Ukraine were aimed at them. Just like they would have done if nukes were fired at any part of nato. It's MAD you see ;) and that treaty is the Ukraine asking to be a part of it.

I'm not really sure how this can be resolved.

Ukraine can't take on Russia, and the West can't assist Ukraine without seriously antagonising Russia, so that's not an option.

The general population of Ukraine seem pretty keen to break away from Russia, but they aren't going to be able to do that. So they'll have to back down or start fighting like insurgents to try and make Russia think it isn't worth it, and given Russia's significant military power, they'd do massive damage to Ukraine before backing down, if they backed down at all.

At the moment Russia are quite clearly trying to strong-arm them into backing down though, Russia won't attack unless they're attacked directly. If Russia were serious about a proper attack they would have neutralised any of Ukraine's forces already.

And so we have a stand-off...

Was it right they booted the Ukraine president out?

I'm not sure what exactly went on there. He was elected democratically and was the recognised president. Was it right he was ousted the way he was?

We're not going to have a nuclear conflict over Ukraine (or anything else for that matter).

Ukraine might end up as a mess after all this though, lots of changes will be happening either way.

Reading the latest Kremlin and White House statements bears no surprises. Obama wagging his finger and saying Russia is being naughty and we'll put them on the naughty step. Putin spitting rhetoric about protecting countrymen. :o

Let's just hope the Ruskies don't try to provoke Ukraine any further because they sure ain't listening to anybody else
