Such old tanks and vehicles would seem more a liability than anything else.

Was awhile back when I read it but I think someone estimated 1/3rd of the artillery of that era/storage will suffer barrel malfunction (often catastrophic) before 1000 rounds - according to this video they are firing around 25 rounds per day on average https://www.youtube.com/shorts/WrTEZh4AT6o so around 40 days of firing max before ~30% of those guns are out of action.

News is saying Russia has emptied its airports in Crimea of military planes and moved them back into Russia. They also closed the Kerch bridge for nearly a day while they installed checkpoints and guards, they are now checking everyone who gets near the bridge, looking for saboteurs

Russia having to dig deep just to keep themselves supplied is crazy.

Something I was aware of but not really thinking about - they are moving some of this hardware 3000 even 4000 miles by railroad to get it into the fight in Ukraine.

With that kind of level of commitment I don't think we'll see any kind of negotiated settlement of this war, short of Ukraine entirely capitulating, any time soon.

I don't think they're ready to fold yet either, I do believe a lot of what they are sending to Ukraine they consider disposable, so that is troops and kit. The loss of the planes is probably the thing that's hurting them the most at the moment.

The cannon fodder, and old gear really seems like it's just there to be ground into the meat grinder.

Seems like they are doing what they can to stay committed to the fight without trying to really throw their best equipment at it. Honestly, this whole thing is so bizarre.

They've done that from the start though, I'm not sure that in itself is much of an indication of anything other than Russia being a large country and the fact that they committed a huge chunk of their regular forces to this invasion. The fact that they amassed over 100k men and equipment on the border and then invaded is enough of a show of how much they were committed to trying to take Ukraine, it doesn't necessarily prevent a settlement if Putin isn't able to progress and can still show some sort of win... though ideally, it would perhaps be better to drive them out by force not let them keep Crimea and a chunk of the South and East.

Will be interesting to see if they do manage to trap significant numbers of troops in and around Kherson soon.

It's brilliant how the method of attack used on the airbases in Crimea hasn't been revealed, even some statements saying it was SOF. If it isn't they can still be running around chasing ghosts while also being paranoid and uncertain about just how far the Ukrainians can now strike with missiles - do they have the US-supplied long-range missiles or did they finish their homegrown ballistic missile?

I was focussing on that they've continued to do that - it is one thing to build stuff up for an initial assault and another to keep maintaining that kind of logistics.

Yup, quite drawn out supplies chains! That's also why Kherson is useful as a place for Ukraine to focus Russian attention on, obvs Ukraine has to act fast before Russia establishes some status quo/frozen conflict type scenario and runs referendums etc.. but also it spreads out supply lines - draw the Russians in there/get them to commit more troops, long drawn out lines for resupply and now the various logistics hubs in Crimea destroyed.
