Is this the new plan then, pummel Ukraine with loads of men and old rockets?

Send men, dont let them back and suddenly you have an area of another country that has russian population that needs saving.. any bordering country is game..

Troops in Belarus could also be to ensure that belarus dont try to break away once ukraine reclaim their lands.

Or

He could simply say the Nazis have all been slaughtered and the Ukraine has paid it's price as in most of the south has been flattened and it's time for us to leave.

Job done.

Some internal politics to take care off and he sits in power for another 3-4 years licking his wounds and priming his successor.

I'm asking this question to everyone on here for your thoughts.

If putin uses a tactical nuke in ukraine

Do you think NATO will respond with force? Or just leave things as they are as they aren't part of nato?

More sanctions but unlikely any direct military action, that would mean WW3 as it puts NATO in direct conflict with Russia which no one wants.

Basically he would get away with it and I think he knows it, he already took Crimea and is currently invading Ukraine, he has previously attacked civilian's in NATO countries and what happened then, you could argue chemical attacks on NATO and still nothing.

This is pretty encouraging, granted maybe some issues with data collection as someone mentioned in the comments - advancing forces = more photos of destroyed enemy equipment, however it was a decent enough ratio back at the start when Russia was initially invaded 3.77:1, dropped a bit to 3.28:1 when they Ukranians got hammered by massive amounts of artillery in the Donbass, now it's like 8.45:1 and even more like 10:1 in terms of artillery and tanks thanks perhaps to HIMARS and M270 and of course the M777, Caesar, Krab etc.

Yes but they'd have to be careful to get the balance right, there needs to be a response else you screw things in the long term re: nuclear proliferation... if the lesson to the world is that a nuclear power can just grab territory then blackmail the world and nuke others with no response then the lesson to the likes of Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and various others is "you'd better get a nuclear weapons program of your own" as the West will be too timid to do anything.

Could well involve a conventional strike on whatever unit, command centre etc.. was responsible and US/UK will likely rapidly find out where it came from and what the chain of command is for that facility. Could well cause strikes against the Russian fleet in the black sea, Russian air defences in Ukraine and perhaps even things like a no-fly zone imposed.

Obviously, this all risks further escalation/WW3 so the balance needs to be right and no doubt they've both worked through a load of scenarios and have had conversations with Russian literally telling them we will at least do X, Y and Z if you try it etc.. though it might also bring negotiations quite rapidly... ironically if it were to happen now with that sort of NATO response then the negotiated settlement could well be along the lines of Elon Musk's tweets*.

*I can see Ukraine getting back to pre-Feb2022 territory, I could see them grabbing back at least a portion of the territory in the east lost to Russian-backed "separatists", I think Crimea is going to be much much harder to get back, as least so long as Putin is in power. That, sadly, might be more of a nice-to-have thing if Russia overthrows him or gets otherwise distracted with internal conflict.

Getting Crimea back while Putin is still in power and if he hasn't used tactical nukes would be incredible but would come with more risk, I think that's where the nuclear threat could be much much higher.

Former head of the CIA and US Army General, David Petraeus gave an interview on CNN explaining that in that event, NATO would respond conventionally using massive airstrikes to destroy all Russian military infrastructure across Ukraine, including Crimea and in the Black Sea. Basically, the ability of Russian to fight a war in Ukraine would be decimated. I suspect he knows what he's talking about and I suspect this has been clearly and quietly explained to the Russians.

What happens after that is anybodys guess.

Yeah I'm not sure how much of that is Washington/NATO doctrine I suspect he's speaking on his own behalf/belief its technically beyond NATO's remit it would have to be a political decision whether its a unilateral US decision or they can bring other NATO members on board if thats what they decide, who knows.

NATO know Russia are running out of options now so will be watching for any nuclear related activity very closely.

If putin uses a tactical nuke in ukraine

The greatest danger is if it doesn't actually do much, relatively speaking. Then people might start deploying them more freely. Worse, they might try strategic nukes which are another thing entirely.
