It would be great if there was popular uprising and some real democracy but if you read a lot about the history of Russia, it has been ruled by absolute tyrants for over 400 years. It would take a lot to change this as its the norm. My worry is Putin gets the bullet and his replacement is even more evil.

Yes, it has always been serfs and Czars even under communism. Today's oligarchs being the large landowners of history. The standard of education and achievement in much of rural Russia means that they will continue to get away with it.

My only comment is that trade must not be at the expense of security for any European nation. Piling euros into the Russian exchequer will lead ultimately to grief again while Russia acts like a world power with rights to its fiefdoms.

I agree but I think it will anyway.

I was thinking; say Ukraine push Russia out of their country. What then? We're not going to go back to trading with Russia just because they were kicked out of the country.
Just wondering what the future holds.
Putin fails, then "magically dies" of cancer or maybe a bullet to the head if they actually want to really kill him instead of just making him disappear and a new face installed to reset worldwide relations.

Indeed how you change this mentality is not a overnight fix, some of the outlaying regions are backward beyond belief really. The only way I think is what we was doing slowly integrating them into the west and over a long long period of time it's felt back home.

Maybe a offer for them to join the EU and a seat at the table....

Maybe a few HIMARS bursts will speed them up.

Even with Kherson gone it still leaves a lot to do before they can concentrate on the Crimea.

Will Melitopol all the way to Luhansk and beyond be any Easier. its still got a long way to go.

Unless Russia totally collapse or Putin id overthrown theis war has a couiple of years left in it yet.

US needs to get the long range HIMARS into Ukraine so they can start hitting bases in Crimea.

Absolutely

If we rewind a few months and look at how Russia was kicked out Kherson - it wasn't due to a huge strategic error from the Russians like in Kyiv and it wasn't due to a Ukrainian blitz like Kharkiv/Izium or overwhelming force.

It was due to HIMARS launchers destroying every Russia supply route, bridge, base and ammo depot in the area and over the course of many weeks the loss of these supplies made it untenable to continue to keep a combat ready force in Kherson.

So the learning from this is that it can be repeated - for Ukraine to take the southern region of Kherson it needs to be able to cut off the supply routes from Crimea and to do that it needs longer range missiles. However it will be a bit more complicated because of that river. I fully expect the Russians will bring down the Nova Kahovka and Antonovsky bridges when they leave the city so that's a 1km wide river Ukraine needs to cross to put pressure on the Russians and that will be needed - just cutting their supplies won't make them retreat you have to attack as well
