"I don't understand why my countries leader, who's country has been named as performing genocide, isn't named person of the year".

'classic' Russia.

Hitler was named as Time magazine's person of the year, so there is precedent for naming hyper-aggressive, genocidal dictators who invade other countries as Time magazine's person of the year. It's about impact on the world, not a moral judgement.

Ironically there was a time when you were more likely to get killed as a young male between 18-24 in a US city than you were serving in Afghanistan at the same age (on a per capita basis). I'm fairly sure I remember that being a quote in the opening chapters of War by Sebastien Junger unless I'm conflating it with something else I read on the topic.

It's cherry picking of stats: "People more likely to die in local hospital A&E than in war zone X"

I despair every time I see thing like that, particularly when people do things like:
"...however, comparing the relative rate of increase shows that INSERT PATHETIC HEADLINE GRABBING NONSENSE HERE"

Solovyov claiming Russia has achieved a great victory today. That's good, at least they won something this year

I mean hes not wrong. There has to be another angle for the US releasing this guy because I cannot believe they would genuinely trade an idiot basketball player for one of the most notorious and dangerous arms dealers in the world. I just can't.

Now they know who it is, it's easier to keep tabs on who he meets and what he does.

Maybe the russians just want to arrange a fall from a window for him after selling off all their arms so they can't fight this war ;)

The above is purely based on watching Lord of War again a few weeks back :D

Some of the modern self-propelled artillery systems are basically that (AHS Krab for instance) - computer does all the calculations, loading is mostly automated (some of them you still need someone moving the shells from storage compartments though) - I think the functionality isn't enabled but pretty sure they can be remote fired/aimed.
Aye there is a Swedish (I think) one where the main reason for humans on board seems to be to assist in reloading it's stores*, driving it, and acting as the final check before firing (and I guess security of it/making sure it's disabled/destroyed if about to be captured), I imagine no country really wants to have a fully automated one because if you do then there is the possibility of it being hacked and used against you.
IIRC the one I'm thinking on comes with a companion reload truck and it can go from being on the move to firing and away again in ~60 seconds (something like 15 seconds after it's fired it's moving), and get fully reloaded from the second vehicle in about 5 minutes as it's got a pair of hoists and it's largely automatic, IIRC the humans are there mainly for the final guidance of the hoisted ammo and charges into the reload hatches, probably a case of the automation needed to do that reliably in real world conditions without a human being too complex/big/expensive/unreliable given the vehicles are designed to basically pull up roughly alongside each other under all sorts of conditions to reload.

*I think it carries around 25 rounds and 130 powder charges and is fully automatic in reloading the gun with the right charges, putting it's stabilisers down, targeting, firing at the selected target and getting ready to roll off again.

The US needs to make a new HIMARS cluster munition customised to the war in Ukraine, but instead of sub-munitions, it scatters cartons of Marlboro across the battlefield. The untold devastation that such a weapon would unleash on Russia would truly be a sight to behold.
