Surely the US and the UK have a ready made excuse for supplying Ukraine with weapons? Are they not obliged to protect Ukraine from attack by the Budapest Memorandum they signed when Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons?

Edit: Russia was also a signatory and guarantor of Ukraine's security... errr

Isn't this all rather pointless. It takes months just to drive something as basic as a car. Getting people trained up to fly/drive all these machines effectively is just either going to be too late or the stuff is just going to get wasted or captured by Russia and reverse engineered.

How so? It doesn't take you months to learn the difference between one car and another. Ukraine will already have tank operators, they will just need to be retrained on using the new gear instead.

Aircraft is a different story, but ultimately a tank is just a big tracked bus. You can't fall out of the sky in one of those.

I guess the main diff is most western tanks are 4 crew and Russian 3
Western, driver, loader, gunner and commander
Russian driver, gunner and commander

So the loader role specifically is going to need to be trained up from scratch pretty much.

Does it take months to learn to drive a different car. I doubt the Ukrainians being sent to train on these weapons are novices.

A lot of the equipment being donated has recently been on exercise in Estonia and Latvia. I expect a fair amount of it is currently either at a staging ground in Poland or possibly already in Ukraine.

This conflict is going to last for years. Knowing ever increasingly powerful weapons are continuing to be delivered in future is as important as dealing with and discouraging a spring offensive from Belarus that Putin is likely preparing.

Hes no longer in control of what will happen in Crimea, Ukraine are fighting for the newly captured territories right now but when thats done then Russia will not have the resources to stop Crimea being take back as they will already be defeated.

This will be good outcome but its not over yet and Putin will not give up too easily.

No, it's already been said (you'll have search back months in the thread), that for people already capable of driving/firing etc.. such weapons and vehicles it can take as little as 3 month training.
