I'm pretty sure Russian strategy would have been to sweep through Ukraine, Romania, Hungary on the one hand and the Baltics on the other
If we consider connected "pro-Russian" states, or those with ethnic Russians living there, then they would have taken Moldova, Hungary, Serbia, at least. And, given increased production capability, how long after that would they be ready to land bridge the gap to Kaliningrad from Belarus through Lithuania, fulfil Serbia's regional ambitions (Bosnia etc.), then threaten the three Baltic states and Romania and Bulgaria.

Former vice president of Russia says Russia's military failures are because of 20 years of ineptitude at the top of the leadership, he goes on to say it's because those running the show like Vlad and Sergei have no military experience.

The guy should stay away from windows

Could be he was allowed/told to express these views. If Putin sees the writing on the wall he’ll need to start setting up the fall guys.

*Russia Will Comply With START Treaty Restrictions: Interfax

He could always do that through private channels, no?

No, Viktor Oban should not feel compelled to use "private channels" to articulate his government's position, definitely not. There should be no need to hide unpopular opinion from public view, that's not the way NATO should be operated at all. Quite reverse.

The latest corruption index is out and Hungary is not just the most corrupt country in Europe it's also only one place above Burkino Faso a poor country in Africa

The hotels of Budapest aren't being paid millions to accommodate an endless stream of illegal migrants entrering Hungary, and the citizens aren't sat dressed for the Arctic looking wide eyed and terrified at their gas and electricity meters....

Feels to me like NATO is heading to a bit of an internal reckoning.
Its now at a size where there is always going to be some internal disagreement, which is fine
But having some of the more "fringe" members potentially blocking countries that have more aligned goals in general seems to be a challenge they will need to address.

I actually know quite a lot of people in Hungary (Budapest) since it along with the Netherlands are our two largest European bases.

I would say its very much like most Western nations from what they say. The older population cling to the old ways, not wanting too much change too quickly as they see it as a threat, where as the youngsters want to move probably too quickly to a far more western level.
As such the oldies vote heavily for the least change and the youngsters either tut or emigrate for that lifestyle.
I think its just a cycle we have to see and go through.

Orban is just a more successful Johnson. Both populists with shady pasts, but Orban managed to keep his job.

Look at them now, Orban in the news being a contrarian and Johnson with his horrific playground story (lie) of Putin saying he would “beat him up”.

Both use UKR for their own purposes and that’s all there is to it. Fortunately one is now irrelevant and the other is just a minor player.

What a truly pathetic post.

Rather than easing, the situation at the Hungarian border is getting worse as more and more illegal immigrants try to cross. So far this year, more than 235,000 illegal crossing attempts have been prevented by police and border guards, compared to almost half that number last year.

In addition to illegal migrants, the number of people smugglers caught by the police is also increasing. This year alone, 2,600 people smugglers have been caught by police, the Parliamentary Secretary of State of the Interior Ministry told M1 news channel on Monday morning.

Bence Rétvári said that this is the highest number since the beginning of the migration crisis in 2015, and the detention of people smugglers alone costs the Hungarian budget three billion forints (EUR 7.5 million).

Some 82 people froze to death between early October and early January, Hungarian Social Forum (MSZF) reported on Friday. The majority still die in unheated homes.

According to the human rights forum, the majority of the victims died in unheated homes, mostly in flats, and only a few in public areas. Many died while being transported to hospital or after being admitted.

You love to see it!

Unless your a ruskie sympathizer
;)

They may have decided those would specifically be perfect for distance launching against these static defense Russia are putting up for their WW1 reenactment
Pound them with a load of precision strikes and you can create a decent gap in the defense they can rush some mine clearing and rapid forces through to create a bridgehead

As we saw with WW2 normandy landings once a defence like that is breached and the breach held its basically useless.

Putin has met and worked with countless western leaders and I think he's on the whole manged to bluff his relationship making out that himself and Russia are strong but a friend of the west. The only leader I firmly belief he couldn’t predict was Trump who on one hand would glad hand people like Putin and then turn around and impose sanctions on countries like China. Had Trump been in power in 2022 I tend to think Putin would have delayed his planned invasion until the next Democrat president came along simply because Trump was that crazy and unpredictable.
Are you mad, if Trump was in power now Ukraine would have already fallen and USA would no longer be in NATO.

Trump lost his second term so couldn't follow up on Putins orders, and make no mistake Putin has something big on him.

Too bad he waited for Biden, a notorious anti-Russia war hawk.

I really don't think it mattered as they would have known about Biden's very long history so should have concluded it would be a fairly bad time to do it whereas Trump was making a mess of NATO almost every other week.
Way, way off the mark, Biden isn't doing half as much as he could do.

In fact I see it as him giving Russia a break, he has put lots if restrictions on what Ukraine can do with their supplies.

Hes refused them F16's and long range missiles. If he's such a Russian war hawk, he would be all in giving them what they really need, not just dribs and drabs.
