The thing is, I don't think planes will help. Converting from one type of aircraft to another with completely different avionics, weapon systems, and operational rules takes a very long time. If we dumped a bunch of Eurofighters in Ukraine, it would take 6 months as a minimum to re-train and be effective in them.

No, it wouldn't necessarily, this sort of comment was made earlier in the thread too, it could be done in less time than that if really needed.

Edit - found it now, I posted this earlier in the thread a few months ago but 6 months is more the regular pace but they could cut that time down to retrain significantly, from a former RAF Air Marshal:
Conversion to a front line combat aircraft for a new pilot would usually take about six months to become limited combat ready. However, a more experienced pilot would take less than half that time, and someone requalifying on type after a break would only take a few weeks. If operational reasons demanded, then a much shorter course for experienced pilots learning a new type, focussed only on the relevant tactics and weapons, could be done in four to six weeks, much of which could be done on simulators.

UK PM Sunak’s Spokesperson:
- We Want to Start the Fighter Training for Ukrainian Pilots As Soon As Possible
- UK Hopes to Start Training First Ukrainian Pilots in Spring
- Britain Exploring the Right Approach on the Provision of Fighter Jets
- We Will Want to Look at Truncating the 5 Year Pilot Training Programme for Ukrainians
- Defence Minister Has Been Tasked With Investigating What Jets We May Be Able to Provide
- Government Has Not Made a Decision on Whether to Send Fighter Jets
- UK Not Looking to Send Typhoon Jets to Ukraine Right Now
- Jets to Ukraine Would Be a Long-Term Solution

The RAF can barley train enough pilots for the RAF

It's not just the pilots, though. The ground crews need training on how to maintain and repair the aircraft. Flying the thing is actually possibly simpler.

That seems a bit doubtful and I suspect if there was an obvious blocker along those lines then the very experienced RAF officer might have noted it. Not to mention for major repairs you can transport jets to other countries.

Errr they was never Ukraine‘s . They was soviet Russian nukes based in former occupied states and Ukraine had no independent control of them .
They left them there so technically were Ukraines and even though they didn't have the means to control them straight away, I'm sure given their ability they could have made them work

Depends a bit on context - I've been watching a few L-39 rebuilds - experienced pilots can get up to speed on flying them pretty quickly while understanding how to maintain and repair them is quite a lot more work even for experienced mechanics. Albeit the complication there is they are often working somewhat blind as to the history of the aircraft and specifics of the aircraft.

The resident CT guy has made up his mind that USA blew up Nordstream then.

The ground crew need to know everything about the plane from which oils and hydraulic fluids to use and when to use them to all the electric circuits to the specific torques required for each nut and much, much more.

Oh look another drive by.

Don’t waste your time guys.

Ah yes, an 85 year old man described as "going off the rails" as far back as 2015 with conspiracy theories and who doesn't believe the Russian government were responsible for the skripal novichok poisoning.

CIA confirmed.

Looks like Sunak and Zelensky have had a busy day! Good to hear the rhetoric about military aid, hope we continue to back it up (eg by expanding delivery of more tanks and other armoured vehicles...), and are doing enough to expand procurement to continue supplying them in the medium term.

Fighter pilot training sends the right messages & a step towards supplying advanced aircraft in the future, so glad we're doing that, even if it won't have any concrete effect in the short term (and questions about our training capacity are valid considering the stories we've heard about limited training for our own pilots, and trainers leaving to go and train pilots abroad for 10x the money etc).

Interesting to hear Sunak talking about exploring provision of long range missiles too.

Spotted three Chinooks flying past in formation by Blandford a little over an hour ago. I'm guessing it was likely them or their security team headed to Bovington.

Let’s hope we deliver. Time is running out I feel.

Lot of air traffic near me which isn't showing on ADS-B, etc. I'm about 25 miles north of Bovington, 15 miles from Blandford. Sounded like Chinooks at one point.

Hope we deliver but a strong showing here does help to get the ball rolling generally.

It's a shame that the US has seemingly went 40 years without a ground-based Tomahawk platform, not that it would even be an option for Ukraine since it's just that new but still.
