I don't know why people assume Russia invading Kazakhstan would somehow be OK, or that no one would care. The key difference here is that it's nearer to us, and as such we have a real possibility of doing something. Russia may well have found Kazakhstan an easier target because logistics.
I'm on the side of whichever country doesn't deserve it. China attacking Taiwan, North Korea attacking SK, Turkey attacking Greece etc. All have the same kind of deal.
Also this isn't a minor conflict far removed from things, this is one of the worlds great powers making moves, that tends to gain more attention because there aren't that many great powers to begin with.
We haven't had an issue with getting involved with far off conflicts when it suits us, so that's a totally specious argument. We haven't had an issue with effectively ignoring conflicts that are far away when it suits us. The defining element is "when it suits us", and the Russian political set up, strongly nationalistic, still strongly Orthodox religious, with an entrenched anti "woke" mindset, does not suit many elements in the West who have got so far in engineering a different social situation that they fear their woke work may become unravelled and further highlighted if Russia gains more traction.
Let me give an example of how "we" allow oppression and political bullying to flourish when it suits us. Cast your eyes around your home and person, and say that your concerns for how China have oppressed and suppressed elements they find nationalistically and politically unenriching, and how your spending has been modified to oppose their actions...
"When it suits us".
