I'm not so sure. For decades the EU has happily traded with Russia, to the benefit of all concerned. There was even talk of Russia joining Nato back in the early 2000's. Personally I think this has more to do with Putin (and close associates) utterly deluded belief in Russia's (read Soviet Unions) place in the world. A strong trading relationship between the EU and Russia strenghens both parties. A possiblity which is probably now gone for at least a generation.

The talk of Russia joining NATO was only in one place, Russia
No one else even considered it that I know of

Ukraine will be too fatigued by then to suddenly go on an adventure into Russia proper and it would undoubtedly mean getting nuked so no there is zero chance they would bother when it would be a pointless distraction from reconstruction.

I think you can't possibly have any idea what Ukraine will be like 5-10 years from now when they have hypothetically ground down the Russian army and pushed them from their borders. And the level of sheer hatred Ukrainians could have for Russia then and what it might lead them to do.

On the other hand, a strong well armed Ukraine on Russia's border seems part of the most likely solution, with a DMZ akin to that separating North and South Korea.

He was the MP for Henley. So was in government at the time.

Well suppose thats true if your talking pre 2008 although they were not in government they were the opposition ;)
So its a bit like saying Starmer now has any say on Russia joining NATO ;)

Anyway Boris is a serial liar. Nothing he says can be trusted.
Got a better source?

Witches chariot. (A 4x4 with auto grenade launcher). She is describing how they built and use it for a crazy attack.

Ha Ha - fair point.

I must admit its a half remembered point and I may have got it from another documentary (or got it wrong). The point of the original post still stands however - that Russia could have been a strong trading partner with the West/EU and as such the the EU was no threat to Russia.

To put it simply, Putin seems to want to rebuild the Soviet Union because of his own warped ideology, to the detriment of the vast majority of Russians, as well as everyone else.

Win or lose, Russia will have an expanded NATO on its border.

Trade with the West was viewed as simply another weapon to be used by Putin to gain power. He was hoping gas supply to EU was going to be his trump card. Compare that to Germany and Japan after WW2, and later China. They used manufacturing to become rich trading partners with the rest of the world. Russia had the opportunity to do the same (given the wealth of raw materials and man power they have) but failed miserably.

We can agree to differ - I think Freddie1980's point about internal tensions inside Russia a very good one.

I'm curious though. How, once Ukraine is fully equipped with whole range of Western weapons systems and with one of the most battle tested armies in the world, while Russia could no longer wage war, would NATO stop them from walking across the border into Russia if they wanted to do so?

What would stop them is the threat of Western support both militarily and for reconstruction evaporating. Also their hopes for EU membership and NATO membership going up in smoke. They have nothing to gain by invading Russia after regaining their territory and everything to lose.

We have had a habit of arming nations in the past which has come back to bite us on the backside years later.

As long as man remains ethnically, religiously, territoriality and financially divided history can go boil its head. We gonna fight! :) As none of these traits and ideologies are going anywhere soon, well, you get the real picture...

You post like you think ultra nationalism is a good thing. It has never been a good thing and never will be. It always leads to division, violence and illiberalism.

Ukraine aren't dumb.
No matter what weapons we give them they wouldn't be able to take Russia.
And lets face it the West arent going to start arming UKraine again should they go on the offensive in Russia and start losing again.

I wouldn't bet my house that there are a load of "kill switches" in plenty of the modern stuff than can be remotely activated in order to render chips etc locked.

Of course that is always a risk. However Ukraine is in Europe and wants to be closer to Europe both politically and economically. It is in its interests to not do something stupid.

What they need to do to get the EU more fully on side is send them some suitcases of cash, like Qatar has proven to be the way to their "heart". Another series of arrests i believe occurred recently. I am not sure the EU is smelling much rosier than Russia at the moment.

EU fans seem remarkably quiet about this widespread abject corruption, which is surprising given their apparent abhorrence of it in other quarters.

Yeah cause thats what a country that is trying to rid itself of corruption really needs... More blatant corruption... What has that even got to do with the thread? Dragging it off topic again on one of your usual tangents...
