Ukraine Invasion - Please do not post videos showing attacks/similar

I found this quite strange considering how many guys they've lost and the pull out of so many western companies, but he pointed out the death toll hasn't even hit 0.01% yet

They've been disproportionally taking people from poorer regions though, as they don't really want those in the richer areas to feel the impact as badly. I think there are some published stats showing this somewhere that I've seen posted here, with fewer (but not zero) people being recruited from Moscow/St Peterburg regions.

I find it strange they can be attacking their neighbour and not really caring about it, but it also shows the Russian mentality. Can you imagine we would quietly get on with invading Ireland without anyone really doing anything to protest it? It's probably different when it's somewhere far away, but close to home is something else.

I don't really expect the sanctions to bite so hard that everyone is living in absolute poverty, but they will cause issues, and the impact may increase as time goes on with new sanctions coming in, loss of trade with the EU, lower gas/oil prices etc. This is all designed to hit the bottom line of the economy and the gov budgets. If Russia runs out of options for tackling inflation for example, then you could really start to see things snowball quickly into chaos.

Judging by the video they were likely all supporters of the war and so **** them, no great loss to the world. Maybe some of them will experience the pain and suffering the poor grunts from the poor provinces of Russia who are the canon fodder and the Ukrainians who are desperately defending their home have dealt with for the last 13 months.

if you tried to blow up Hitler at one of his speeches you'd perhaps get some collateral damage from the Nazi supporters/members gathered to hear him speak... again, cry me a river.

This doesn't appear to have occured at a political rally though, it's a city bar/coffee shop.

Who knows who could be responsible, there's a very long list.

Given the geographical location of St.Petersburg...
It could be:

  • Dissolisioned russian politicians
  • Dissolisioned russian civvies
  • Russian students
  • Angry wagner types
  • the Finns
  • Lithuanians
  • Latvians
  • Estaonians
  • Belarusians

The list goes on.

That's about as relevant as pointing out that a Hitler speech occurred at a sports stadium.. Hitler is there to deliver a speech not play sports. Likewise so what if the venue for this guy's talk was a coffee shop, he didn't just randomly pop in for some coffee there's a big projection of him on the back wall and an audience has turned up to listen to the nazi guy speak.

I've mentioned before that one of my old college buddies/friends is a Russian who now works in the UK military sector (not a spy), well I met up with him for lunch today and because he's still in touch with friends/family over there he had a couple of interesting insights.

Basically despite what our media may be saying about the success of western sanctions/boycotts not much is really different over there, the public know they're at war (regardless of what their government says) but it's not really seen as a massive thing, similar to how America was during the Iraq invasion. I found this quite strange considering how many guys they've lost and the pull out of so many western companies, but he pointed out the death toll hasn't even hit 0.01% yet and that's the real death toll not the Kremlin's propaganda one so people aren't bothered by it yet. As for the pull out of western companies, most of them were selling things that only the rich could afford (rich in Russia being anyone who can afford a car <15 years old apparently). Losing McDonalds was a blow to the poor at first but apparently the state owned McDonaldski (not it's real name obvs) is making the exact same food and charging less so nobody cares about this either.

Obviously I was still a bit awestruck/amazed that everyday Russians coudl be so unaffected by everything that's happened. So he sent me a YouTube link to see what Russian Streamers/Youtubers are up to right now:

Which pretty much sums up what's happening in Russia right now I guess xD

Yeah the real poor in Russia are used to a hard living - sanctions don't really change that and as I said before the war most Russians are just tired of it all and more mindful of getting by and write off anything in the media whether domestic or foreign as propaganda. I thought being so sick of war there might be more push back even though the Russian government tends to be oppressive in that regard but seems most are just trying to tune it all out.

Bad phrasing on my part, I guess what I was trying to put across is they can expect more of this thing in future, and personally I belive this is more likley to have been commited by locals rather than some grand multi lateral war effort.

Oh yeah I agree, it's most likely some Russian infighting and hopefully we will see a bit more of that soon.

Your maths is off, by a long shot.

Pure copium, it's already over 10 times that but your friend is innumerate or indeed listening to Kremlin propaganda! Not sure what your excuse is either tbh..

What is his narrative and which employees quit and which investors were pulling out? SpaceX is a huge success with him being founder, owner, CEO and Chief Engineer LOL

Shows how much you know. The person who actually designs Space X rockets and engines is a guy by the name of Tom Mueller, but Musk which is very typical him tries to steal all the limelight by claiming it's all him, just like he stole Tesla. You can try coping harder

It's more like 0.1%.

COVID 'only' killed approx 0.3% of our population - yet most people know somebody who died of it.

I'll be honest I was just repeating what I was told by an expert I trust and didn't bother to check the math, but I have now and it is correct.

The MoD and BBC both estimate approximately 50k killed as of mid March, that's only 0.035% of their population. Factor in the fact that the Kremlin propaganda figures will be much lower it makes sense that he's right about the people there not really being bothered/concerned by it yet.

No they don't. The MoD estimated 40-60k killed as of the middle of Feb.

They've since issued an update on the 15th March to say 20-30k killed around Bakhmut alone.

0.035% is still 3.5x what you claimed before, so it's not correct. It's very much likely to sit somewhere around 0.06-0.1%.
