Something that could really shake up tank battle in Ukraine is the arrival of the Challengers with their depleted uranium rounds, and not for the reason many would think.

Our media/politicians have been quick to dismiss Russia's outrage at the sending of DU rounds to the battlefield as posturing/etc but there is actually a fair chance it's genuine. DU rounds are a funny area as they are technically chemical weapons (like US white phosphorous bombs) but under western doctrine are not actually considered chemical weapons as it is not their chemical element that is intended to kill (like US white phosphorous bombs). However under Russian (and Soviet) doctrine they are classified as nuclear ordinance, which is why they haven't deployed any to Ukraine, yet.

There's something of a Pandora's box element here that by sending 28x Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine we may have inadvertently made the hundreds of T-72/80/90 operating there more effective against Ukrainian armour :/

I thought Russia were already using the same rounds. if not however then you could be right .prolly should have waited for Russia to use them before upping the stakes

Reason T80 is effective against T64 is mostly thermal sights. T80 has them, 64 doesnt, and the 64 and earlier 72 in use have fixed magnifiction sights as well. Theres a video of an 80 killing a 64, and the 64 couldnt see the 80 on front of it

According to the UK government when asked the MoD have no credible evidence of their use in Ukraine by Russia.

It's not proof they haven't but it is proof that there's no proof they have, if that makes sense.

It's not upping the stakes at all. It's about as dangerous as a random piece of granite in Cornwall. Modern battle tanks are made of depleted uranium. If modern armour is hit or a depleted uranium shell is used then it is wise to avoid it for 24 hours until any vaporised metal has gone. It's not very wise to inhale it but apart from that it is perfectly safe. You could have a depleted uranium dart on your desk and it would never do any harm to you. "Depleted" basically means "all the dangerous stuff gone".

Should be noted this heavily depends on when the tank in question was built (or last upgraded). IIRC T-80s started getting thermal sights on mass in the early 00s and T-64s in the late 2010s.

Another factor in the effectiveness is that the T-80 uses the T-64s autoloader so the T-64s can't simply beat them on rate of fire like they can the T-72 and T-90.

Now I can understand why in WW2 countries did things to peoples with the same nationality as the enemy country; things that would be against human rights today. Slovakian mig29's sent to Ukraine need repairs because prior to them being delivered a Russian technician damaged critical components on the plane

Correct - Depleted uranium gives off radiation, but it's Alpha particle radiation. Alpha radiation cannot penetrate human or animal skin - therefore the uranium round sitting on your desk will not cause cancer to you or anyone else. It's only harmful if it gets inside your body, but chewing shell casings or bullets is not recommended for anyone period that's nothing to do with uranium, even consuming the intervals of a ak47 bullet or a different type of tank round will **** you up.
