Having said that I don't think Ukraine could do much in straight military battle with Russia.

"If by 5am tomorrow morning they do not surrender a real assault will begin on units and sections of the Ukrainian armed forces all over Crimea," defence ministry officials are quoted as saying. So far there is no further confirmation of the ultimatum from other sources.

Could wake up to some rather terrible news tomorrow then.

I'm going to have to ask for a source because the exact wording of what a PM may or may not have said on the issue of Falklands' sovereignty matters, but it is a fact that the FIs are a BOT and you can look up the definition of that yourself on wikipedia. WRT self-determination, that just means if the Falklands' referendum had returned a preference for Argentinian sovereignty then the UK would have respected that.

No one has said they're a sovereign nation. The UK has said they have the right to self determination, which the Argentinians dispute.

The UK government argue they have exercised their right to self determination and decided not to be a sovereign state. They wish to remain a British Overseas Territory, with some self-governance. The sovereignty of the Falkland Islands remains with the UK.

If the islands had voted for independence, it would be a matter for the UK government to take note or not.

Depending on the terms of the "surrender" this could go quite badly - giving Ukraine forces a deadline to make an orderly withdrawal from Crimea would be one thing, asking them to officially lay down arms and surrender another and might force NATO's hand if Russia did then attack them for not surrendering.

EDIT: While the BBC article does say:

Ukraine is also on its own. It is certainly a partner-country of Nato but it has none of the security guarantees that membership of the Atlantic Alliance would bring. There is simply no question of Nato becoming militarily involved in this crisis.

Its not really that simple.

Surely the Russian ultimatum is good news?

Previously the Russians were perhaps forcing Ukraine to make the first move. Yes the Russians had brought in all the troops, the boat, and surrounded the Ukrainian base etc. But none of that had been violent, it was just I'm bigger than you bullying. If Ukraine had gone and defended themselves then they would have delivered the first punch and been seen as the bad guys (like how some people see what happened in Georgia).

Now that Russia has said "or else we attack" Ukraine should sit back and do nothing. Then Russia come & attack and boom, Russia definitively were the ones that started it.
