I have heard some persuasive argument that the gun on the A10 is very far from an excellent weapon and what the A10 is actually good for is being a light bomber when the enemy has zero anti air ability. Stomping on a helpless target kinda thing.

The part that seems to be universally agreed on is that it's good for morale/intimidation appearances.

The A10 have killed a lot of friendlies because the plane relies on the pilot to identify targets by looking out of the plane with binoculars while moving at 400mph. If you're in a British convoy and you see an A10 you better hide cause that thing is gonna think you're Iraqi and light you up

As some have called it an emotional support aircraft.

Not sure about the gun being far from an excellent weapon though, the bigger difficultly as mentioned above seems to be identifying the target - the cockpit videos even when guided in accurately from the ground they often need 2-3 passes before they see the picture like those on the ground in terms of where to shoot - something probably less of an issue in this day and age with the progress of tech it should be fairly easy to rectify.

Visibility on the A10 is so good the pilot mistakes British tanks for Russian flatbed trucks carrying orange rockets

The A10s problem is that it's built on late ww2/early Cold War ideology from idiots in the US Air Force who thought that technology makes planes too complicated and that the best plane is something simple with a big gun attached that makes the pilot feel good

Watching that video does make it clear that it is a big fat target for anyone with access to decent anti-air.

Fun fact: Hans Ulrich Rudel, ace ww2 Stuka pilot and unrepentant nazi, was supposedly a consultant to the US when developing the A10. Rudel's kill record is unbelievable- literally hundreds of tanks and a battleship:

You know the A10 is a **** plane when it gets called in for a fire mission and the pilot thinks these two vehicles look the same...

There is a reason why friendly troops in Iraq and Afghanistan would pucker their cheeks anytime a A10 would come in for a danger close fly by cause you never know if they think the friendlies are the enemy instead

These things happen. It's tragic, but when you play with dangerous toys, people get hurt. Not always the right people. The only reason this one was newsworthy is that it was two allies involved.
