With Poland being more than awkward, Erdogan quoted as saying 'I don't agree with negative approach to Putin' and Zelensky saying 'If we don't get the aid, we lose the war'. Either the west get's things in order pretty damn quick or we face the reality of a new world order decided upon 'might is right' and whatever that brings in future wars, as it surely will at some stage. What a world we live in were horrific crimes against humanity can be potentially rewarded by our indifference and cowardice.

This is the problem with so much short term thinking while the agendas or ambitions of the likes of Russia and China aren't limited in the same way. Hopefully it won't happen but there is a very real potential for a growing threat on the borders of Europe that in the future we'll be ill prepared for.

Yep think we need to reinstate national service.
3 years should do it.
Either start at 67, or when you retire if earlier.

They are usually those most in support of national service I find so lets get them doing it.
You can have board and lodgings so no need for a pension so that will also help with the pension bill.

Not fit enough for active service, no problem we can get you some physical exercise picking fruit and veg until your ready.

I can't see us getting it together unfortunately.

Over 1 1/2 years and we still dither, this war could have been over ages ago of we have Ukraine what it needed , especially after the vatniks ran away from Kyiv etc

41 artillery systems, that's got to be causing problems if your trying to defend an area and you find yourself without a means of firing back (not to mention degrading the quality of artillery personal over time). About a third of the total artillery losses have taken place over the last 3 months.

I think it's important to remember that this counter offensive is just as much about dismantling the Russia army as it is about taking back land. One other point on the artillery systems, I think I read somewhere artillary cannons need to have the barrels replaced after it's been used 2000 times after which the accuracy starts to diminish. The fact these are getting bumped off on a regular basis suggests these are getting moved nearer to the front which means they are getting picked up Ukrainian drones or counter battery radar which in turn points that Russia isn't able to logistically support it's artillery crews.

Huge if true.

Yes - the only way this has a kind of good ending is if the Russian army's will to fight is degraded and they don't even want to be in Ukraine, taken out at the knees. Just taking back land alone probably won't end this war - even if Ukraine pushes them back to the border it doesn't mean the Russian army/regime will be like "fair enough you win" - which seems to be the belief of far too many commentators on this war or at least the impression they give. That doesn't happen any time soon if Russia is given opportunity to grow into this war.

About 650-700 tanks, ~1500 armoured vehicles, ~500 artillery systems. Soldier losses aren't known but estimated about 70K currently (research using publicly registered information such as legal filings puts the minimum around 47K - interestingly "independent" studies by Russian entities based on inheritance have also put Russian losses at a minimum of ~47K killed, ~80K medically discharged - realistically it will likely be at least double that).

Russia bans exports of petrol and diesel. Due to major shortages of ready to use fuel inside Russia, the exports had already fallen by 50% in the last month and now the Kremlin has implemented a ban

To be clear Russia is still exporting crude oil, it's just the already refined stuff that it wants to keep for itself because they are running low on supplies for their domestic market

That's true. The only way I can see Ukraine winning is when someone shoots Putin.

This war would be won on the Russian front. When life is so absolutely bad for the citizen that they refuse to go to war. Or as the poster above said. But we may get another nutter.

Going on past russian history it will take a hell of a lot more before that happens, Russia has plenty of fodder outside of Moscow and st Petersburg and they have far less means of communication due to poverty and state interference.

Yes I realise it is largely still a peasant economy run by a Czar. There must be a tipping point where fed up with potato soup they kick out the leadership. It is bound to be a long way below our expectations though.

Doubtful, the Russian state Duma is fall of Putin's unfortunately, many of whom think he's not being aggressive enough. That's why it's important to dismantle the Russian army and degrade to a point where it can no longer threaten Ukraine. That way it doesn't matter whose running Russia so long as they don't have an army that can take on Ukraine again.

Yes, I think it's doubtful, too. I am not sure what the endgame for this war is. It all seems to come down to political staying power, and the West doesn't really have much of that these days.

Putin knows all he has to do is keep going, and wait for western support to falter. Looks like he might be right.
If Ukraine falls then I suspect we will all regret it.

Putin: 'Why are we struggling to keep our vehicles on the road?'

Ministry of Defence: 'You require more vespene gas.'
