I was today years old when I realised ATACMS is an acronym for "attack them's". Yes I'm slow.

The Us army vet I watch calls them attack-ems

The yanks love their acronyms, but I love the fact they pretty much always say the acronym, then because its been forced to sound good they then explain what it means, kind of defeats the point ;)

<grammar mode on>

Isn't that the definition of an acronym though, that they create another word you can say, not particularly that they need to indicate what it's meaning. Eg. NASA is an acronym, but FBI is an initialism.

ATACMS just about makes it as an acronym imo, though you do have to fudge the pronunciation a bit :p

Oh its the point alright.
Its just that often its not good enough that it really gets across what its about so they explain it.
IMO really boils down to how good a chance they get to either (and good point) simply initalise it, or Acronym it. :)

I've seen a great deal of effort put into devising names, and therefore initials, in order to come up with a cool acronym.

The worst effort I have seen (which I was forced to notify to management, despite personally finding it very funny) was: Pupil Assessement and Examinations Development Officer.

Love it

I've seen the opposite as well.
Decided as a group a project name (was a big project with like 50 people deciding the name on the kick off, amongst other things) and then 6 months later it suddenly was claimed to be an Acronym by someone senior who wasn't at the kick off

LOL...that cannot be real.

:confused:Does that term hold some sort of negative connotation?
I don't know, Russian propaganda seems obsessed with labelling people living in the UK and the white folk in the US as 'Anglo Saxons', just a unusual label to give us (although not wholly inaccurate but it does ignore other large groups that settled here such as Danes, Norseman and the Normans). If I were Cornish, Welsh, Scottish or Irish I might be a bit more offended by it but as I said it's weird take on the UK population, just call us British like the rest of the world does.
