The first EU/NATO country that is turning it's back on Ukraine?

Russia has been preparing the groundwork for years IMO nibbling away there at Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, etc. I suspect the plan would be to get pro-Russian political parties in power then if they rolled over Ukraine, build up forces along the border as the stick and hope to quickly flip them to become Belarus like states to Russia and so the dominoes fall. Still a huge danger there though things haven't gone well for Russia in Ukraine. (And if those 3 fall they've effectively cut off Romania from Europe geographically albeit more symbolic than practical).

And we are helping them lay that groundwork with our refusal to give Ukraine what it needs, longer we dither and drip feed the more likely that Putin's plan will succeed and by the looks of things ...he's on course.

Funny how he panders to right wing nationalist elements in these countries whilst fighting so called Nazis as he calls them...then you have the batcrazy extreme lefties who see anything russian/chinese as a communist utopia coming to rescue us from capitalism, with the inability to see what they support despite all the evidence.

It's not a question of refusing them support it's a question of walking a tightrope. No one wants (both sides I'm sure) an event or feeling of being backed into a corner where one side can no longer back down. The west can easily provide enough weapons to push the war back but at the risk of major escalation.

It's a **** show that Russia will exploit (badly) with the cheap lives of its citizens until a resolution is reached either way.

My contention is that if the power brokers on both sides know this and are waiting for the compromise I don't see why 500,000+ people are dead and wounded.

The two older ladies will see Putin as a saviour in a way. They would have grown up during a period where Russia was supposed to have prospered after the fall of the USSR. Through its own corruption and the West doing its best to make sure Russia wasn't a threat, these ladies will have grown up through hard times with Putin coming along and holding the remains of the USSR together - almost Stockholm Syndrome in a way.

The younger ones being interviewed are more of a worry. The one lad with his GF didn't seem to taking any or it seriously and the two Uni looking lads stumbled around abit until their teacher stops the interview - that needing to happen tells you enough.

The Ukrainians can’t give Russia 20% of it’s land and leave 20% of its people to the mercy of Vladolf, so they fight. We know Putler wants all of Ukraine eventually and is looking even further west.

On the other side, Putin is willing for Russian people to die for his egotistical dream off leading an empire.

They've got to have something on him.

Or perhaps, being a super rich oligarch and living in a bubble of yes men, where your only daily interaction with the outside world is through 'X' - turns you into somewhat of an easy target for authoritarian states armies of influencers.

At least he's made his position abundantly clear now. It was only a few weeks ago people were arguing about how pro Ukraine he is.

What I don't like is I'm still using Twitter, although only to read. I only started using it to follow what's happening in Ukraine as the mainstream media, especially at the start, were so poor in their reporting. What would be the best alternative? There are so many Twitter like social networks now with Mastodon, Threads and Bluesky. Are any of them any good for updates from Ukraine?

If so, it would be nice if instead of people posting Twitter links in this thread, they posted the links from an alternative.
