The maxim gun despite being over a century old is actually perfect for this role bar the small calibre and non explosive rounds.

The fact the barrel is water cooled means a sustained rate of fire can be kept up without damaging the barrel/effecting accuracy.

It’s why the wests version (cwiz) is a rotary barrel system.

The polish have a self tracking towable anti drone system that has Picture in Picture tracking and a 12.7 mm machine gun attached to it. I’m surprised the west hasn’t brought them.

I suppose with the gephards being tracked down from every corner of the world that these are what the west is aiming to counter Russian drones

The last buying I'd read was that the US had bought 60 Gepards from Jordan to send to Ukraine which is a huge boost in numbers, virtually tripling the current number. Hopefully they can get enough of the Swiss ammo to keep all those guns ready to go!

They downed 74 of 75 shahed other day in Kyiv so air defence is going well.

That cant be said for Russian in there snow bogged down trenches a lot of videos being released of drone drops, poor buggers Putin sent them to there deaths and there not even getting picked up off the battlefield just bodies left to rot.

For one gready man wanting a legacy not happy with what Russia has.

A lot of the Geoard is overkill for what's needed to down a Shahed drone.

I wonder if we'll see a mass rush to develop a lighter, cheaper modern SPAA based around autocannons instead of solely relying on missiles.

Perhaps a good candidate for another Ajax variant.

Big time snow in Ukraine

Weather could have quite a big impact on this war in general - far from nailed down but looks like Europe could be in for a harder winter than recent years.

I don't know why there isn't more of an effort to scale down stuff like the Terrahawk Paladin, there are also several other similar takes on that kind of system, and stick it on the back of something like a Supacat HMT - can easily deal with stuff like the Shahed drones and even much smaller ones, and probably a good range of larger ones as well.

So they did eventually repaint it with a green cameo. I was wondering about that as when they got delivered they still had the desert cameo from when they were deployed in Iraq (presumably).

Reports say all drones at Moscow shot down. Other strikes caused damage to power infrastructure.

CNN reporting on drone strikes, including Moscow.

Reuters also reporting it
The only problem is you can never trust anything coming out of Moscow.

They will say all drones shot down to save face but in reality some will be getting through

There will be targets hit.

But its not just one drone is it, they send them in numbers, there could be dozens in the sky, they need a fast firing gun to get them all, the window for getting them isn't open for long.

Rheinmetall already make a mission module for the Boxer that has a Skyranger 35mm turret, which is a modernised version of the Gepard’s 35mm Oerlikon gun that can fire programmable ammo.

I simply put up the media reports, following a question about lack of information in the twitter links in another post.

I don't trust either side's reporting, to be fair.

If Putin is really worried about NATO coming for Russia, why has he emptied his soldiers and equipment out of the Finish border and Kaliningrad?

Because it's not about NATO. It's simple greed, ego and wanting to leave his mark and leave a legacy.

I can see why some of us folks in the West would think that but in actuality it is about NATO BUT not for the reasons Putin says it is about NATO. (So you're partly correct. :))

I have the fairly unique perspective of dealing with Russians for many years; I've had two long term relationships with Russian girlfriends and one of my best friends is from Russia (Born in the same place as Putin, St Petersburg but brought up near Murmansk as his step dad was a naval officer at the base there). Though generally speaking I would have to confess I now despise most Russians and when I'm out and about in the Baltics and hear people speaking Russian I tend to "cross over on the other side".

That being said, I'm still inclined to correct some of the wrongly ascribed motives from my friends in the U.K. that really know very little about Russia and Russians in general. Yes, so on the face of it, Putin saying that he is protecting Russia from a potential attack from NATO is utter rubbish though in halting (or trying to halt) NATO expansion he is really trying to protect a Russian identity, that notion of them being superior etc.

I'll try and explain it this way. There are 3 east Slavic countries; Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. Their roots, history and peoples are greatly entwined, their languages are ~70% the same etc. So, to lose one of those countries to NATO/E.U./The West is unconscionable to Putin and the elites that control Russia. It could potentially spell the end for the way of life for them and how they control Russia. This is at its core an ideological war, similar to ISIS etc.

Using a crude analogy it would be a similar sentiment here in England if Wales decided they were going to become a Muslim fundamentalist country and aligned itself with Afghanistan/Iran. So when Putin says it is about NATO he is ultimately telling the truth, he is lying as to the reasons why it is about NATO et al because those reasons are not a defensive reason for a ̶w̶a̶r̶ "special military operation". They know NATO will never attack them first.

One of Putin's (another false) reasons was to protect the native Russians in East Ukraine who were being badly treated. This incidentally is a similar reason that Germany gave in WWII when they went into Poland as the Nazi's accused Poland of persecuting ethnic Germans living in Poland. Ironically many of those ethnic Russians from eastern Ukraine now curse Putin's name.

If it had nothing whatsoever to do with NATO then Putin would not have made it a condition for a cessation of hostilities last March mentioned above.

Not disagreeing but I suspect nato and Eu are interchangeable here and it was Ukraines change to a more pro Eu government which has driven this.
Of course Russia doesn’t want to say out load that integrating more with the Eu will boost your economy and improve your way of life so they have to play the Nato angle.
