Ukraine Invasion - Please do not post videos showing attacks/similar

Yup this seems the more sensible approach. Hit them where it hurts and generate internal pressure. Although with putin he seems past the point of caring

Your last sentence hits the nail on the head. Russia has had sanctions on them for years, and they pose little effect. Travel bans to countries they have no intention of visiting is hardly threatening - it's like banning you from visiting North Korea.

There's a lot of Russian money in London, and i'm sure some of these Russian oligarchs have Putin's ear. If we deport and suspend these Russian oligarchs (including pulling their children out of private schools) you can bet they'll be able to influence Putin into making some changes.

They should instantly mothball Nord2 indefinitely.

They should properly that Swift will be cut off by Friday if Russia does not remove its troops from ukraine soil.

Plus other escalating sanctions during the week until the Russians leave.

Russia could be temporarily excluded from the UN.

The problem with most drastic sanctions is that it will also hit European countries economies as well. At a time of rising costs / inflation, and on the tail end of the pandemic, most countries economies are in a very fragile state.

Putin going away is not going to change Russian foreign policy.

Likely scenario is militarisation of Europe, Russia increasing cooperation with China. Long term Europe as a whole is worse off.

Russia has 75% of its forces deployed.

If Poland, Lithuania attacked then I'm sure that Russia would be defeated conventionally.

Would they fire nukes at European countries. It is of course speculation.

Japan ought to build up its military in the disputed islands, and Georgia ought to be looking to build up forces. That will give Russia to think about. Along with Finland and Norway building up troops on the border, and Poland and Lithuania surrounding Kallingrad with troops.

That will give Russia something to think about.

you got to ask the question why does russia have 75% deployed to just invade Ukraine...or is there a bigger plan at play...

Because without a massive and overwhelming force, they risk huge casualties.

Nice! And if they don't get any progress on this issue then hopefully it gets scrapped!

If it's just delayed for a bit then resumes then that's going to be really weak and perhaps something Putin is banking on... weak, half-baked sanctions aren't working, they really need to hammer him now.

The nordstream 2 pipeline is complete. Rather than playing about. Just blow a chunk of it up.

I think he has national support. That only grows under hard times. It will be our fault. Just like the invasion is a peacekeeping operation.

Only cause they're being lied to by state media and politicians! Apparently yesterdays "live" broadcast of the gather the ministers thing ... their wristwatches showed a time hours before. The timetable of the entire thing has been preplanned for weeks if not months most likely.

IIRC 190k is about the total number of troops Ukraine has. Russia has many times more to use if it needs them.

The media has touched on a lot of Ukrainian citizens getting firearms training over the last few weeks. Whilst they might not be as well trained/skilled in fighting, a lot of them absolutely detest Russia and are likely to fight to the death to defend their country.

out of interest where did you get the figure of 75% from ? Numbers wise I am sure I read that Russia has over 1 million active military personnel with around another 2 million in reserve. So 75% comittment would be a lot bigger than 190K troops currently posted on the border.

Sounds like the Germans have halted Nordstream2
Good. Europe has to stop being reliant on questionable countries for energy. I would like to see a massive investment in nuclear. I appreciate that isn't without its own issues. But it's a bridge while other technologies are improved.

Will need to be a BIG investment, we've got 8 nuclear plants and 7 of those 8 are due to be closed by 2030

Yes, understood. But we have to start right now (whether that is nuclear or something else). Kicking the can down the road just makes it harder and more expensive. Maybe refurbishing each plant could extend their lifetime. No idea though as I'm not an expert. All I know is that 3.6 roentgens are not great but not terrible.

Isn't sanctions all that was done after ww1 and led to ww2? So we drive Russians into poverty and desperation fueling nationalism and resentment towards the West?

I see no win in this. Feel free to look up Karelia.... This looks exactly like that. Ukraine will have no choice to concede and pressures will be unsustainable and pointless. Poor Ukraine ‍♂️. The world should never forget the oppressions made by Russia during and after WW2. I can't believe the agreement was for Finland to pay Russia in addition to giving up one of its largest resources and an incredible amount of land mass.

I wonder if they had put sanctions when Russia invaded and took over Crimea? I think that was a similar situation to this one, were 'ethnic Russians' declare themselves no longer part of the Ukraine. Then Putin uses it as a context to roll in his armies to defend their independence.

I think we should either stay out of it, or if we are getting involved then we needed to militarily confront Russia, or have a credible threat there.

I can understand the concerns of Russia with Nato forces coming ever closer. But it seems Putin doesn't respect the West as he keeps pushing the boundary, literally each time.

I know a few things about Finland as I have a friend who lives Kuopio. But I need to brush up on the history of that conflict. I've heard about the Winter War. But I need to learn more of the aftermath.

Just curious if anyone knows, we seem to have a lot of Hawks flying over at the moment, though we do live near BAE systems.

NINJA3 is the call sign for the current one, doesn't half make a racket.

I see there are loads of these exact aircraft flying around. What are they for?

The Hawk is a trainer; its also the plane the Red Arrows use

I actually work with quite a few Russians, and for the most part they describe Putin et al as thieves and gangsters, and deep down think that us Brits especially, have a lot in common with themselves. It's something you do have to tiptoe round though, and in the past I've seen the spectacle of a rather young, newly qualified and naiive 19 year old Russian 3rd mate standing on a dinner table shouting the odds at the rest of the multinational officers onboard about how Putin will make Russia great again, while another of his colleagues, same rank and roughtly the same age, sat with his head in his hands out of sheer embarassment, and then come around the next morning to quietly apolgise to all of us who were there for his compatriot's rather unedifying spectacle.

I think what Russia's going through right now, and has been over the past decade at least, has been an identity crisis, and with the rumours going around about Putin's health, i.e cancer and Parkinson's, that this could all be a last roll of the dice on his part to go out in a blaze of glory as a great Russian hero. I can only hope that we can somehow run the clockdown with the status quo intact, until Herr Putler does us all a favour and shuffles off his mortal coil. I pray that then, calmer heads, who no longer have their head's buried in the arse of fictitious Soviet glory days, prevail in Moscow.
