Any chance eventually that a smaller Ukraine emerges, supported by hundreds of $bn from the west, is helped to clean up corruption and on a path to be fast tracked into the EU?

I don’t think so, as soon as Putin sees evidence of that happening it’ll definitely be game over for Ukraine.

Putin knows he can pretty much do what he wants and isn't really afraid of these fairly weak sanctions.

Sadly, no country cares that much about Ukraine, and Ukraine is not a NATO country so doesn't qualify for our protection at a military level.

Putin isn't going to touch a NATO country, so I suspect it'll stop there. If somehow Poland came under threat then we might be looking at a WW3 scenario unfolding, but that's a long way from where we are now.

It's a sad situation for Ukraine really, they will get steamrolled so ought to start negotiating with Russia on some level if they can.

Many of them, understandably would rather fight and die. Shame the west doesn’t grow a pair and start calling Putins bluff rather than rollover and accept their cash. Our forefathers would be ashamed.

Just heartbreaking speaking to some of my Ukrainian friends today. Many of them with family members ready to fight…and we know the outcome of that. More than anything our own leaders have failed us by financing Russia for years.
Isn't London literally awash with Russian money...

Watching this Washing Post link whilst waiting for Biden to speak and oh my, what hot garbage is this. For all BBC faults, our journalists make WP ones look like bubbling toddlers.

Biden is always late, lmao.
I switched to the Reuters stream, nice and quiet - just Biden's speech and that's it, don't want the headache, lol.

Don't wish that on them too. They'd end up a basket case like Greece. Kept on life support purely for the EU to export to.

We should have declared war in '38. When Poland attacked Czechoslovakia.

You should have. Neither Nazi Germany nor Russia would attack Poland in 1939 if British or French forces were "peacekeeping" southern regions.

What I'm saying is simple - each time Brits and Franks hide like pussies and limit their response to "sanctions" when stuff happens on mainland continent it always ends with pan-european war and millions of lives lost. The last time it happened it took half a decade and literally entire world to unwind it. Plus another 45 years to lift the iron curtain.

Don't be pussies Britons. Europe needs to act together. It's time to slap those russkie troglodytes back to the twenty forking century they crawled out of. If they can't behave like Europeans, maybe they need to sit this century out as well. ;)

I'm genuinely curious how you believe Putin is still bluffing, he's literally invading Ukraine, where is the bluff ? He's the only one acting and showing his hand in all of this while everyone else is trying to call for diplomacy when it's obvious Putin doesn't care about it

The UK and France are the only viable European armies and neither are big enough to fight for everyone. They are mostly defensive now. Plus in 1939 nukes didn't exist.

If it comes down to it the UK and France are going to defend themselves and the rest of the EU, well, time to hang a picture of Putin on the wall...

I think that unfortunately NATO would prefer if Russia invaded so that it empowers it's current members to restore the cold-war fighting capability and gifts Russia with an immense headache of actually going to war/occupying a hostile country.

Yes, a bloody war and massive loss of troops then inability to hold onto any gains is just the smack in the face required tbh (provided it goes that way).

The sanctions they put on the banks will bleed the Russian economy dry, but it might take a while. Theres like 2 Russian banks which can still trade and even those took a big hit earlier.

The risk of course is that such measures precipitate more aggressive acts as Putin gets desperate to reflect anger at the Russian government at the West, but there's really no other choice other than being highly belligerent ourselves.
