I wonder what the rationale for allowing China and Russia such eminence in strategically important materials? All the while communities that depended on those jobs have been ripped to shreds for what?

This has been the clear aim of Russia from the start. They want to control resources and Ukraine is another piece of that puzzle.

A lot of countries have placed restraint on extraction of resources within their national boundaries effectively outsourcing their procurement. It would be more honest for the UK to drill for gas again using the best available practices rather than to buy from more unscrupulous countries with poor safety, environmental and human rights standards.

Interesting that Putin seems to have signed the recognition of the breakaway regions 2 hours before the security council meeting to decide on it.

Wonder how long before Macron and the likes realise Putin is just playing with them and he has already decided pretty much what he is going to do - the only reason he involves himself with these diplomatic measures really I suspect is to confirm to himself that nothing has really changed.
That whole show with the head of his spy agency…was a show. Utterly bizarre and maybe that’s what he wanted.

What surprises me is that I’ve seen quotes of Germany sourcing 2/3 of their gas from Russia. Why would you ever rely so heavily on such an unstable place? Though I guess it’s not much different to relying on china for our electronics…or all of the crappy working practices/lack of human rights.

Yup - as my comment before it was practically out of Pulp Fiction LOL.

Lol seriously?
What? Did you read it. Rather than just repeat media stuff or regurgitate opinions it might be worth understanding why this is happening from an official source.

unfortunately Boris seems more bothered about the champions league final than writing anything similar

Worth a read to get both sides. This is a different one to what was posted before and goes into history a bit more and their issues with nato/us

'Both sides', LOL.

Russia has invaded Ukraine, currently occupies three regions, recognises two of them as independent states, and is now scaling up a fresh invasion. The Ukrainian constitution does not grant its regions the freedom to declare independence unilaterally (whether by referendum or any other means) so no amount of bleating from Putin or his regional puppets can legitimise these claims.

You can't 'two sides' this. It's an illegal invasion and occupation of sovereign territory.

State of emergency starting in Ukraine. I wonder if that will now be enough to trigger the full reserve mobilisation.

I would like to emphasise again that Ukraine is not just a neighbouring country for us. It is an inalienable part of our own history, culture and spiritual space. These are our comrades, those dearest to us – not only colleagues, friends and people who once served together, but also relatives, people bound by blood, by family ties.

You want decommunization? Very well, this suits us just fine. But why stop halfway? We are ready to show what real decommunizations would mean for Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the so-called civilised world, which our Western colleagues proclaimed themselves the only representatives of, prefers not to see this, as if this horror and genocide, which almost 4 million people are facing, do not exist. But they do exist and only because these people did not agree with the West-supported coup in Ukraine in 2014 and opposed the transition towards the Neanderthal and aggressive nationalism and neo-Nazism which have been elevated in Ukraine to the rank of national policy. They are fighting for their elementary right to live on their own land, to speak their own language, and to preserve their culture and traditions.

How long can this tragedy continue? How much longer can one put up with this? Russia has done everything to preserve Ukraine’s territorial integrity. All these years, it has persistently and patiently pushed for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2202 of February 17, 2015, which consolidated the Minsk Package of Measures of February 12, 2015, to settle the situation in Donbass.

Seems pretty lol'worthy to me.

I know what’s happening now based on all the media coverage. Just the question is why. I thought it was an interesting read that was all. Just to get a diff perspective. The war of Ukraine vs pro russia regions has been going on since 2014.

Are we saying nato haven’t broken any agreements ?

No, because NATO is not involved....

What different perspective? He invaded a neighbouring country, that's it, full stop, everything else from Russia is propaganda, pure and simple, only a conspiracy nut job or a simpleton will see it any other way

Tin foil hat time, anyone thinking about taking a few hundred quid out, in cash, to have just in case the russians target the financial systems?
