My other half is Ukrainian, her parents live in a small town between Lviv and the Polish boarder. They've said they have no intention of leaving Ukraine in the wake of an invasion.

Ostensibly no - maybe at worst some cyberattacks or similar - but Putin seems to be not entirely acting rationally.

God help them. I hope the West actually realises now that Putin is determined to turn the clock back over 30 years and effectively restart the Soviet Union. He won’t stop at the Ukraine either, the Baltic states will be bricking it right now.

Things seem to have quietened down quite a bit compared to a few hours ago, basically the news channels are reduced now to just going round and round the same 4 reporters asking them the same questions repeatedly and getting the same answers, over and over just to fill air time

These do often have unintended consequences....

I think Putin didn't want to lose face and was determined to get what he wants like a petulant child. And to hell with who he hurts along the way. I fear many innocent casualties and families torn apart by this....

Even if he successfully invades Ukraine it's not just going to end there, there's going to be long term tensions and subterfuge for decades or until Putin goes.

I don't see it, Russia will probably just hit military targets to cripple the military and the civillians wont get involved.

Is this the same Russia that indiscriminately dropped cluster munitions and thermobarics into civilian neighbourhoods in Syria, then gave it a few hours before then hitting the nearest hospital where all the wounded would have been gathered, or a different Russia?

Putin cannot leave until he dies because all of his doings will be uncovered and he cannot allow that.
