It's a huge border so not surprised they waltzed through in many areas. I wonder if the thought is to keep the front line relatively light. Hope to absorb the initial wave of cruise missiles (which there will be a limit on, eventually they will run out) then hit back hard where they can. Further in country Russia go the worse it will be for their air support. Ukraine has heavy armour and the helos will be messed up by infantry. As soon as it becomes a more even fight the aggressor will start taking serious loses.

On the one hand I'd really like Ukraine to hold. On the other capitulate and just wait out Putin, he won't be around forever.

When I think about this situation I just feel sad. Are we never going to progress pass this endless cycle of war, posturing and recriminations?

Sigh.

No, it's abhorrent. There is no context in which a former president of the USA (and one who may run again) praises Putin' military strategy as he invades and attempts to capture a sovereign country's territory that isn't.

Wait has he done that? Is there a new statement from him?

@Minusorange is right, these were Russian actually:

One of them shot down here:

Attacking the airport here:

Am surprised more haven't been shot down, I expect lots of air defence has been destroyed by Russian missile strikes earlier but the stingers ought to be able to deal with these helicopters.

There is a video of it on the ground here:

Looks like the Stinger hit the side weapons store causing a detonation but the helicopter is remarkably intact.

"Whoever tries to stand in our way or create threats for our country and people should know Russia’s response will be immediate and lead you to consequences you have never encountered in your history" Putin

I take from this that his take on assisting Ukraine is not limited to just direct military support but also possibly to sanctions, weaponry etc. Therefore NATO may as well join Ukraine in at least aiding with air support.
