What is Russia invading for ?
The only person who really knows is the little man Moscow. Although from what Putin has wrote and said over the years we have a good idea.

i) He doesn't want another ex Soviet republic aligning it's self with the Western institutions (EU, Europe, NATO etc). So by invading he may try and remove the pro western regime and install a puppet government.

ii) Stop NATO expansion and get NATO to remove missile and military bases from around Eastern Europe.

iii) Not the reason but a potentially big benefit is a manufacturered war might shaw up support for him across Russia or at least servers as a distraction to Russia's internal problems.

Talking about it on Politics Live and they think Russia has built up enough funds to counter the effect of sanctions for 2 years. They also control oil, gas and wheat exports which can make life even more expensive in the west.

Putin might be mad but he's been planning this for a long time.

He is very smart, he knows exactly how far he can push and what consequences he will get in return. I expect him have the next 5 years planned out.

I also suspect Belarus will be next, but that will be less of an invasion, more a welcome party.

The west will survive without russian oil, or gas. Will russia survive by not being able to export it?

The threat of sanctions might not be a deterent but in the long run Russia will be isolated with ony the North koreian and the Chinese on their side, oh and Belarus whos troops are also involved.

The Banking system will collapse on them, they will find it difficult to move money about without Swift and that will hurt their other businesses.

He will stop at Ukrain as everyone else around him is in nato, thats a different ball game for Russia and not a game Putin will p[lay.

Sadly Ukrain is gone, it can't be stopped, all thats left is how many innocents die

This looks like a fair reading of the situation.

Though apparently SWIFT will not be cut off.

I'm guessing the west is kind of saying.

You want Ukraine
You want nato to pull back

You can have Ukraine.
We won't pull back.
Deal?

I wonder how quickly after Putin has Ukraine and says 'sorry about that. Shall we be friends again' that the gas pipe gets switched on and sanctions begin to fall .

Amazing.

Probably. But I'd hope the west would wake up and stay building to not be reliant on Russia

If we had the leftie sandal wearers way we wouldn't even have a nuclear deterrent.

That's irrelevant to the fact that the Tories are essentially fully paid up Russian/Putin assets and the Brexit campaign was funded by Russian money. Own your own **** before you start throwing any at anyone else.

So is not jumping to oh **** ww3 etc

They do it all the time, calm down.

I never said WW3, or anything about nukes, lol.
It's still relevant, given the timing of other events, probably something you'd consider before flying jets over there no?
