Still just seems like the Russian armour is on a nice roadtrip. Where is the resistance?

Probably guarding more important places incase Putin attempts a full take over, they will probably allow him easier access to take what he said he would to reduce the death count.

I think the lack of initial resistance in places, Russian troops able to pour in in single file across bridges etc.. seems to be in part because the Ukrainian President hadn't mobilised/didn't believe an invasion would happen until it was too late.

The helicopter assault on the airport north of Kyiv is a bit bold/seems a bit odd - the Russians have dropped off some airborne troops there, presumably intending to secure the airport but they seem a bit cut off, several helicopters seemed to be destroyed in this operation and the Ukranians still have some fighter jets/air defence... any attempt to land large aircraft there is super risky and could be taken down by MAPADS.

British journalist from CNN filming Russian troops just outside the airfield:

They might not last there if they're cut off!

Putin does not want Nato troop build up on his countries borders, his concerns were pretty much ignored, the biggest being Ukraine promise not to join Nato, Ukraine refused and now we are here.

I thought a sovereign country could do what they wanted within their borders in terms of their own military/alliances?

Russia should not get to dictate whether another country wants to join NATO or not.

And people were saying he wouldn't dare touch Ukraine, yet here we are, I wish the US Intelligence was wrong this time
Which people were these? He was always going to invade - he had made it clear with his ultimatum to NATO. Even the Ukrainians I know were more living more in hope than reality. My Ukrainian friend said that the only difference between now and Crimea is that they wouldn't totally be unprepared and have much more troops available.

The only thing that has surprised me is that it has taken Putin 8 years to invade. I just hope that the wasted loss of life is kept to a minimum by a short conflict.

He threatened nukes if we got involved militarily. It looks like we won't. It's best to just let him do it. He can't and won't touch NATO.

Worst case scenario: he wants to create a Russian Empire and starts doing deals with China. China invades Taiwan and they create a Russio-China superstate against NATO :D

so who is the boss?

the funny thing is both Putin and Xi would want to be number 1 and not number 2.

If putin threatens nuclear then he should know the circumstances - and defcon 1 it is.

Unfortunately for diplomacy to work it needs trust and Putin has shot that through.

I think this is the first time in my life I'm genuinely concerned about Nuclear weapons. I'm 50 and the possibility is actually there, maybe distant. But not something that can be ruled out.

These are definitely worrying times.

Oh please, it's not even close, Russia may decide to throw in a tactical small yield Nuke to close off some tactical avenues but that is highly unlikely as the world wide response would be catastrophic for them.

Thread of drama queens at the moment :)

Kiev MP just on the World Service suggesting that Russia was making a play for Chernobyl. Air attacks should already be taking out the rear of Russia's advancing clusters of troops & equipment.

Funny how Russia shares borders (and dodgy leadership) with China and North Korea.

quite but any tactical nuclear use is a breach of law I would suspect.. like chemical and biological. Putin has shown his not above using chemical weapons on UK soil.

Outside of serious sanctions, I'm not sure what can be done here.

NATO will not get involved, they can't. If Russia and NATO troops start fighting then all bets are off. It could escalate into WW3 in a flash. NATO would rather abandon Ukraine than risk that - and really who can blame them.

To have any real impact, Russia needs to be categorically cut off from all global markets and finance systems, SWIFT, etc. Any assets linked to Putin or his supporters need to be seized, globally.

i wouldnt bet on this, would you go to war for the defend of say Latvia, or Greece?

I reckon a frightening percentage of fighting age men in the UK today would jib at defending England, let alone anywhere else. Some have said as much on here already, today. A good few would probably turn out to be enemies within.

Russia should not get to dictate whether another country wants to join NATO or not.

If Russia feels threatened by NATO troop build up and threatens military measures unless your country promises not join NATO then you would have to be an idiot to ignore him.
You can argue the rights and wrongs of this and as you said Putin shouldnt get to dictate but he is the bigger dog and these are the consequences.

At this momen in time, this thread post is best created on a chat room instead like a discord or slack with the amount of posts every second popping up!!! I bet u about 2-3 new posts would have been posed by the time i finished writing this!!!!!

Yeah there's no way anyone is reading all the posts in here.

It'll be like trying to talk in a room where 100 other people are also having conversations.
