It really is interesting which side in this are the violent ones, and which are better behaved. Was watching Sky News last night when they said that in Ukraine 'the police had to bring in buses to help the pro-Kiev protestors escape from the more violent pro-Russian supporters'

Sorry but no, the pro-Russian/anti-Kiev demonstrators were already out in force in Crimea prior to gunmen taking control of anything, and Crimea was rallying incensed by Ukraine's appointment of a new anti-Russian/pro-EU leader who set about immediately discriminating against them by repealing Russian language laws.

If Russia had not gotten involved then the new Kiev government would simply have quashed the demonstrators, ending any hope of independence/unity.

This is a wild guess, at best. In fact, considering the Russian demonstrators in Eastern Ukraine have not been quashed yet, your scenario is unlikely.
