id imagine that "any attempt to hold a referendum would be illegal and they would not acknowledge it" is because you cant be sure it would be fair while Russia is occupying the place and potentially fixing the result against you

the answer as I see it is for Russia to back off (even just back into their Crimean Bases) on the agreement that a fair open vote is held about the Crimea - no one can cry foul then

The trouble with that is Russia doesn't like or do fair open votes.

Look at a map of Central Europe from 1988.

Look at one from 2013.

Can you see why the Bear isn't happy yet?

Russia is just going to have to accept that it has to respect other countries right to self determination and that it can't force other countries to be part of a greater Russian Empire again. We had to learn that lesson in the 20th century.

yet again I lol at your sources and roll my smilies eyes with haughty derision

Actually his source is pretty accurate although worded with bias, a lot of that stuff has been declassified due to the US's X years of secrecy rules, so it's long been made public some of the "dodgier" stuff they have done, I.E overthrowing Iran's elected government and installing a puppet dictator who was as bad as Stalin.

I think the US would be best to stay out of it because they clearly do not have a good understanding of the reason behind it. Especially not a the superficial level of politicians and media. I heard one us military spokesperson said that obama should just shut up because his cheap comments could start ww3. "yes we can!"... no lets not start ww3 obama.

Russia is no angel by any stretch and is actively manipulating an independent country to its own advantage. But then the west has no grounds to criticize that type of actions.

Ideally the russia and west stay out of it and ukraine stay out of the eu and i think it could work it self out. ukraine political strife is another story and something they need will need to sort out.

Realistically i can't see russia backing off at this point, if the us impose sanctions then russia will retaliate by dropping the dollar and not repaying debts. Military actions over the region i think would be unnecessary as the land is not worth fighting over. If the us attack on principle alone then they are hypocrites.

The US wants it more than anyone else. Far from staying out of it they instigated it.

I've just seen the Ukrainian Paralympic team's protest in front of President Putin at the Paralympic Games opening ceremony. For those that haven't seen it the team decided to take part in the ceremony but forgo their places in the parade lap, apart from a solitary, wheelchair bound man carrying the Ukrainian flag. Very dignified, very powerful - the guy was in tears when he'd finished his lap and was congratulated by his team mates.

How exactly will Russia drop the dollar? Its economy is the size of a cockroach compared to the US economy. If you mean it starts to refuse dollars as payment for resources, it would go bankrupt in a month.

Putin has no way to win a financial war, his only hope is for the weaker EU countries to back down.

B-b-but I like Putin, he strong, like bull.

Why don't the Ukraine rebuild it's ICBM's again? Considering the UK, USA are not sticking to the Nuclear disarmament agreement, why should the Ukraine stick to their end of the bargain?

We are all gonna die some how anyway, why dont the UK and USA stop being pussys and stick to the agreement... let's see how much bottle the Russians really have, just a bunch of bullys.

Well I think that the Ukrainian economy won't be able to afford a nuclear weapons programme. Do you have a source for the UK and USA not sticking to any commitments made on nuclear disarmament?

According to the memorandum, Russia, the U.S., and the UK confirmed, in recognition of Ukraine becoming party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and in effect abandoning its nuclear arsenal to Russia, that they would:
  1. Respect Ukrainian independence and sovereignty within its existing borders.
  2. Refrain from the threat or use of force against Ukraine.
  3. Refrain from using economic pressure on Ukraine in order to influence its politics.
  4. Seek United Nations Security Council action if nuclear weapons are used against Ukraine.
  5. Refrain from the use of nuclear arms against Ukraine.
  6. Consult with one another if questions arise regarding these commitments.
