Oh wow I did not expect western media to put this to light, people who care about information obviously knew all this right after the vote at the end of February, I figured since they didn't report it then they'd never report it.

Not many people realise just how bad the interim government is (same people who stole after orange revolution + neo-nazis), we can hope that after the elections the new government will be better but come on, we all know it wont.

Have we all seen this? http://www.independent.co.uk/news/w...storm-missile-base-in-sevastopol-9177696.html

Russian troops attempted to storm a Ukrainian missile base in Sevastopol on Friday night but were thwarted when the defenders barricaded themselves inside.

Stun grenades were said to have been thrown by the attackers who used a military truck to drive through the gates to the base but no shots were fired.

About 100 Ukrainian troops are thought to have been in the missile installation and the Russians left after holding talks with the base commanders and reaching an agreement with them. Estimates of the number of Russians involved ranged from 20 to 60.

Wow, I'm seriously impressed by the courage and restraint of the Ukrainian forces in Crimea. I just hope it all ends well for them and everyone else.

Good article on what the Kremlin is trying to achieve with Russia Today. I wonder if certain people in this thread count as Russian "information warriors"?

The bald-faced lie has now become commonplace – RT is already showing Crimea as “Russia” on its electronic maps – along with other, spookier, tactics. Even the NSA doesn’t actually publish the interesting gossip it hears on Angela Merkel’s phone, but the Russian secret services have no qualms about posting misleading audio clips online, taken out of context. The latest, if you missed it, was a fragment of a conversation between Baroness Ashton, EU high commissioner for foreign policy, and the Estonian foreign minister. She was calling from a landline in her office in Brussels, he was on a landline in Tallinn. During the call, made at the height of the violence in Kiev, the Estonian repeated a garbled theory he’d heard about the identity of the snipers who were shooting demonstrators.
His garbled theory didn’t prove to be remotely true: the BBC Ukrainian service investigated, and spoke to the doctor who was the alleged source of the gossip. No one who was there has any doubt that the Ukrainian government, with Russian support, ordered the men to fire. But the seed of suspicion has been planted. The conversation is now being cited by Russian parliamentarians and used to spread the outrageous story that the demonstrators themselves organised snipers to kill fellow demonstrators.

You have to be seriously deluded if you think RT is a reputable news outlet.

They are widely acclaimed and held in the same high regard as North Korea's media!

Concerning the missile installation defence, i've heard conflicting rumours about what has actually occurred - apparently a gate was rammed down, but the gate later showed no sign of damage.

Also, what sort of missile payload is stored at this installation?

Every single human has bias - it is each individual's prerogative to assess the data and come to their own conclusions about what the real total unbiased black-and-white situation actually is.

Doesn't have to be like that.

Why do the BBC and Sky News never mention the back story.

The reason Russia are unhappy and are not respecting Ukraine's sovereignty is that the EU offered Ukraine so many billions, the EU / US showed support to the rioters and essentially ousted the elected government.

Is this the right way to do things?

Maybe i'm misinformed (after all, how do we know the full picture?!), but wasn't the ousted leader put in place by Russia/Crimea, and not through agreed public channels through Kiev?

That in itself is contrary to agreed policies, and therefore was the first catalyst. The public voted (by force) against this pro-Russia leader who was unfairly put in power, and that is why the West do not support Russia's justification.

I'm not saying that the angry-mob mentality was the right way of doing things, but it achieved it's objective in ridding the seat of power from an unfairly elected individual. Sadly, that also served to escalate it to involve Russia by removing their puppet, and allowing them to 'come to the aid of their poor ethnic Russians' caught up this situation.

What are you on about, he was democratically elected with impartial European observers present to confirm validity. Where did you get this nonsense that he was put in power through "Russia/Crimea" and "not through agreed public channel" whatever the hell "public channel" means. Even western media with it's heavy bias did not report this nonsense.

The sad reality your view is what most people in the west think, completely missing the actual problem of the country and just how deep the problems are.

Whilst your forum etiquette stinks, you are correct - the BBC article where I drew my thoughts from was concerning the Crimea 'state' and their leader Aksyonov and not Yanukovych.

Out of interest, what would you say is the solution or way that you foresee it to be resolved?

Why would you reply to Johnnytoxic point about Yanukovych government and talk about Crimean officials without actually saying that you're talking about Crimean officials. Very misleading. Also link the articles you are discussing next time.

Solution for who? Different parties want different resolution and neither of these resolutions care about people of the Ukraine.

The people of the Crimea ultimately should be given the right to self-determination, so if a fair and open referendum is actually going to be held then it's really the only way to go.

the rioters and essentially ousted the elected government.

Technically speaking the elected president was impeached by the elected government following the shooting of rioters by the police.

Having said that it did happen after he fled and the government was overrun by the rioters, so it was no more/less legitimate than anything the Crimean government has done following the taking of their HQ by armed men.

The new government has said they are prepared to use military force against Crimea to keep it a part of Ukraine.

The only reason why they havent, is that the Russians have more weapons in Crimea than what Ukraine millitary has usable right now.

The new government in Ukraine, is very far from democratic government/western/european government that we are led to believe... They are arresting the pro-Russian movements in Eastern Ukraine, apparently they cut off some Eastern regions from funding too....

They bought it onto themselves, you just do not get into power and remove Russian language as 1st law passed and then wonder why whole country is splitting up.... Morons.
