Ultima Mobile - 15.4" WSXGA Laptop

Yep, it was run off mains with high performance power option selected. Highest score I got was just over 5000 with the lowest just under 5000. Had 3x successful runs of 3DMark with the rest failing to complete due to shut-downs.

9000 seems to be the ballpark figure for this system.

looking at the bottom of my laptop Ive noticed that it seems all the vents on the underside are covered over. I popped the cover off to have a look, and the vents all look to have a sheet of black plastic covering them. Is this how it should be? even where the fan is ( under the round vent) it is covered over with black plastic.

Noiced this myself but on closer inspection some are indeed covered but most are being used to direct the air, the sheeting is sealed around 3 sides but 4th side is open and is also placed a little away from the plastic intake. The fan one is indeed sealed which means it will draw the air from inside the rest of the system promoting greater airflow over other components.

To help diagnose this keep gpuz running and run the ATI tool (works for nvidia) which will load up the gpu a great deal. Hopefully you should be able to monitor GPU clock speed, temperature and fan speed.

Unfortunately I only have the demo version of 3dmark06 so cannot break down the score for you to help diagnosis.

I'm not really clued up on GPU's so wouldn't know what to look out for / safe parameters. It's being looked at by OcUK now though so they'll hopefully sort it :)

Ahh didn't realise that OcUK had it, they will quickly sort it out, I've heard they have tinkered with the odd pc now and then ;)

Just finished running 3D Mark 06 and got a score of 9108 :)

Spec:

T9400
4Gb Ram
320Gb 7200 HD
Vista Home Premium 64 bit SP1
Nvidia drivers 176.25 (quite old but latest for download from Clevo website)

If you are experiencing a low score, made sure laptop is plugged into the mains and you have the 'High Performance' power profile selected otherwise stuff will be downclocked.

Did you do any tweaking, and which drivers did you use to get this score. i have the T9600, and got a lower score than you   :o

Nvidia drivers are 176.25 from the Clevo webste, only real tweak would be to turn off realtime scanning in windows defender. Out of curiousity what score did you get?

i cant remember exactly, but it was around 8950... ill have another play with mine tonight see what i get.

i only run the test once quickly without checking everything over.

something i did notice performace wise is that i get less FPS in games when i set my machine to AHCI mode under vista in the Bios. when i run in IDE i got better results.. cant understand why?

UT3 runs a nigh on solid 60fps with everything maxed out in IDE mode. in AHCI mode i was getting nearer 45fps :S

Turn the laptop on and keep tapping the F2 key to get into the BIOS. There is an option to select whether you are installing XP or Vista. They are set at default as Vista but if you install XP without changing the setting you do get a BSOD.

Just like to point out this did not work, Could it be it's an old copy of XP Pro lacking SP2?

I may be missing a very fundamental point here, but I've seen one of the new HP HDX laptops for £899.99 delivered, with the following spec:

16" Display - 1920 x 1080p
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P8400 2.26 Ghz
nVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
4096 MB (2 x 2048 MB) DDR2 memory
Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD±R/RW
320 GB SATA Hard Disk Drive 5400 rpm
Vista Home Premium 64 Bit

Now - surely for £899.99, this beats the OcUK model?

Not in my opinion...

Is this Centrino 2?
Graphics card is pretty poor in comparison to a 9800M GTS
Only DDR2 RAM compared to DDR3 for the Ultima
HDD is 5400rpm compared to 7200rpm

I presume you can upgrade parts??

How much would that item be if you were to match the Ultima spec like-for-like?

Mike

It is Centrino 2 - and a better one than in the Ultima's standard £955.59 model
Alright, it's DDR2 - but 4GB instead of 2GB
The default HDD on the Ultima is also 5400rpm
The display resolution is higher on the HP

If you spec the Ultima to the same as the HP it would cost £1322.43 (admittedly you'd have a better GFX card, and DDR3 instead of DDR2) - but that's over £420 more!!

Would the 9800 instead of the 9600 gfx solution really make that much difference?

Yup, this single component is what is the greatest differentiator in all laptops. Each person has to decide the value for themselves, price alone was not my only reason for opting for the OcUK one. I couldn't be happier with the purchase and spent a great deal of time looking at everything that was available out there :)

Sorry to hear you've experienced this. I've managed to locate your order and have found out what went wrong so that it doesn't happen again.

I have arranged for a few goodies to be sent out to you today which I think you will like.:)

Correct. The 9800M is a lot more than the 9600M.

They were sent by second class post so will take 3-5 days.:)

Hi Slackworth

Sorry to be a pain but is there any possibility of looking into my RMA / GPU issue please?

Not really getting the help I hoped for unfortunately.

Thanks

Mike

Try this link for a comparison of the 9800GTS to the 9600GT.

Basically the 9600GT has lower clock speed (500 versus 600), half the shaders (32 versus 64), and half the memory bandwidth (128bit versus 256bit). All this means that it gets half the 3D Marks (in 06, 5095 versus 9683).

If you tweak the options at the top of that page, it also says that the 9800GT (which is roughly the same speed as the GTS) manages 118fps with Fear at max settings (no mention of resolution though), compared to 38 for the 9600GT.
