Interesting then, right at the start of FP1 Sky bring news that Verstappen has signed an extension now to the end of 2020 with RBR. Of course I presume to a large degree that Max has a great position here to negotiate, Ricciardo much older might be looking for a bit of a payday which the Ferrari no.2 seat would certainly provide and would give him the shot at the no.1 seat in a few years maybe when Vettel is done. RBR will therefore have Max as easily their best current option and losing him would mean every other team has amazing drivers while RBR wouldn't. Even if they put Sainz in the car in a couple of years I haven't seen anything that suggests he'll get close to even Ricciardo level let alone genuinely top driver.

I suspect Max has some good get out of the team clauses, but I also think the massive improvement in performance through this season has made Max aware that RBR might be a good option in the next couple of years anyway. 3-4 years from now there could be all kinds of options available as maybe Hamilton and Vettel could be leaving after the most recent contracts they've signed.

I've thought for a while now Ric would head to Ferrari after Kimi goes. Makes sense really.

Not sure Vettel would want that?

Fighting team mates, whilst great for publicity but harmony within the camp - is it worth it? Lewis is performing better than ever - Same for Vettel. I feel for Ric though. It appears that Red Bull have basically declared their express intent to favour Verstappen.

I think this is a mistake. I hope Ric finds a seat worthy of his talent (coming from a Hamilton fan).

Yeah, I'm surprised RBR are essentially edging towards Max over Ric. Ric is the perfect fan pleasing poster boy, just listen to the crowd when he's on the podium. So for Red Bull, who are all about their corporate image, I would have thought they'd do all they can to keep him sweet. Mind you, it's not like Max is lacking a followership is it.

  • If Hamilton wins, he is world champion if Vettel finishes sixth or lower
  • If Hamilton finishes second, he is world champion if Vettel finishes ninth or lower and Bottas fails to win
  • If Hamilton finishes third, the title race goes on to Mexico

Yeah, not gonna happen this weekend then. No good reason that Vettel would come lower than 4th or 5th at the very most, unless of course he has a DNF. But the chances of having to retire his car in two races consecutively is surely very unlikely.

Dodgy last lap from Hamilton and Bottas.
Although Hamilton's dodgy lap was still faster than Vettel's fastest lap.

Ocon has got a gap on his teammate, which will make him happy. Less chance of him running him off the track. ;)
