Unlock your ATI 6950 to a 6970 Thread

I am still getting different reports on temps in GPUZ and CCC.

Just did a DX11 benchmark run in F1 2010 with my '6970'.

GPUZ said temps at 85C but switching immediately to CCC the temp was showing as steady 75C for a few secs before slowly dropping.

i've just thought , 20+ on the power control makes 12% beyond the specified power limit which is safe but surely if u then oc the card it'll use more power/watt which would make it unsafe?

Dunno.

Having the card at +20 does naff all for performance for me. I have tested it.

Also depends on how far you want to push I guess.

TBH I'm tempted to get another :p

can't wait for my paid to arrive on Thursday :) was going to order a pair of 6970 but the article got put up on TPU so i bought the 6950's and some more watercooling stuff :D

Bargin!

You all might want to wait for AMD's response to it before rushing out and buying one.

On a normal card there would be no way for them to tell what card it is except for what the BIOS says, but given that these cards have a second read only BIOS it might be possible for them to block it if they are able to do some kind of device id comparison check. If this hurts 6970 sales considerably they might decide to do that if it's possible.

Gonna do this to my pair of 6950s when I get my 3x27" Iiyamas - Will def get a difference flashing due to the biiiig res

And also GJ02, do you need to connect both Xfire bridges? I just have one hooked up...

cheers

Nah doubtful m8, AMD tend to encourage a bit of tweaking. Now if it was Intel....;)

OMG...
Chinese rumors about 1920SP in Cayman XT for 6+8pin power, 6 SIMDs deactivated. AMD hid the BIOS.

2.6 bln transistors/389mm2 = 1920SP/120TMU

a hurt in 6970 sales but its pushed so many people to buy a 6950 sales are bound to go up.

About to buy two of these beasts, can anybody tell me if they come with the crossfire links included in the retail packages, and is any make preferable over another or are they all pretty much the same standard card with different manufacturer stickers on, there is quite a price difference on some of them..

Does anyone know what the minimum power required for 2x 6950s unlocked (+20% power). Tempted to get another now.

i7 920 at stock, 12gb RAM and 7 hdd. I'm guessing a corsair 620w won't cut it?

Thanks.

Pretty much all GPU's are the same printed circuit board. The brands just stick a cooler on and put them in their own box. Some put a pathetic overclock on them and sell them for more. Some have better warranties and customer service than others. Some put their own uprated coolers on.
My HIS came with a Crossfire bridge in the box.

You will get a better gaming experience from overclocking your i7. I wouldn't get 2 6950's on a 620W psu, even if the entire rig is at stock speeds.

Very tempted to go for a 6950 now and have a go at unlocking one. Need to upgrade from my 4870 and now seems like a good time :)

Will the rest of my system be a bottleneck? Q6600 3.6ghz, 2gb ddr2 1066mhz

For the price of 1 monitor and another 6950 it is tempting to try Eyefinity. I can't get a decent overclock with 12GB of RAM. :( I might keep an eye on the for sale section for a 1kw PSU, they have gone really expensive new.
