Unlock your ATI 6950 to a 6970 Thread

Well this has settled the decision i was having to make between the 6950 and the 6970! Just have to hope AMD dont catch on and start laser cutting the boards!!

Just caved in and ordered HD6950. Upgrading from 5670, should see quite a boost, especially after flashing to 6970 :)

A question about power...I have a OCZ 500w power supply. This should be fine for 6950, but does the bios flash Up the voltages
And create more power draw? Rest of the kit; 8gb DDR3, AMD 955 (no overclockers as of yet...) and 1tb HDD. I suspect it will be ok, just wondering if anybody has a similar setup, power-wise.

Cheers, roll on 30th. Will get results up, pre and post flash. Also pre CPU overclockers also, will be interesting to see how much difference it makes.

I 'would' buy one but ocuk purchasing not workig through mobile doh. Gibbo, do a 6950 deal and i will find a pc on the moors lol. (Hoping a pony has one ;-))

Good news on the unlocking, always nice to get a little extra.

flashed a vtx with sapphire 6970 bios, mem as 1375 ,shaders 1536 but clock is at 800 still.tried his bios with same result runs happily at this and will run at 880 with +20 on power control.Any ideas why 800 clocks or should i try asus bios.reminds me of gto2 days 12 to 16 shaders lol.

Someone is working on a 6950 bios that unlocks the shaders but keeps the memory timings the same. Allowing for higher clocks.

So basically you get a 6950 with unlocked shaders powertune etc... and ram timings

I flashed mine using the easy method from Techpowerup (just clicked the flash_to_6970.bat file).

Everything is working perfectly on my HIS caard.

What bios does this method use? I've seen a few people saying it's best to use the Sapphire or Asus bios.

I just downloaded the Sapphire which is liked from the techpowerup article and used the win flash method. I do have a Sapphire card

tbh the asus oc bios let's you oc the memory a lot higher than stock bios.

so far 1400mhz works perfect , i couldn't get even 1375 with stock bios

Ordered 2 HIS 6950s .... this flash to 6970 has helped me make up my mind and if it don't work I'll OC the hell out of em anyway .... the 5970 is now heading for auction!
