Unlock your ATI 6950 to a 6970 Thread

What are people getting in crossfire for temps? I'm hitting 100c under load on one card but theres no crashing or problems.

And is anyone else disappointed that theres just no games that stress these cards?
I mean, i can now play Crysis @ 2560x1600 maxed out. One of the limiting factors before with the 58xx series was that they didn't have enough RAM so it turned into a slideshow with some AA. Now thats fixed and with the extra speed theres just nothing that cripples these cards, or really makes use of them. The problem is obsolete console hardware. Even the new Crysis game will be on them so i dont expect that to really stress PC hardware like the original did back in it's day.

hi guys. are these still unlockable? which ones do you think would be best for unlocking / overclocking the sapphire ones or the HIS ones. might buy a few of them

thanks

Yep they are, and any brand 6950 can be unlocked from what i know. My HIS cards both flashed fine.

I'm hitting no more than 72 on both cards, that's with OC and more volts too

Can someone please explain to me, at what point in overclocks do I use the powertune slider, as of yet I've not used it, purely because im insure of it's full usage. Any info please welcomed

it's depends on the game really.

most games won't need u to up the powertune

So I have now unlocked mine to the 6950 unlocked cores, put the powerslide to 15% and overclocked the core to 840 and things are looking good :)

Picked up an XFX 6950 this week so I did a bit of benchmarking over a few hours just to see the differences. This was done with my CPU at 3.8Ghz, and only did 1 run, and not 2. Running a 2nd time only seems to alter the min fps. My conclusion is

* This 6950 easily overclocked to 840/1350 just using CCC. The difference in the heaven benchmark was the following results
6950 800/1250 vs 6950 840/1350
FPS: 46.5 -> 48.1
Scores: 1170 -> 1211
Min FPS: 11.7 -> 18.6
Max FPS: 114.9 -> 119.3

* The 6970 unlock at 800/1350 (to try simulate just a shader unlock) gave little/no increase in FPS/Score at all
6950 800/1250 vs 6970 800/1350
FPS: 46.5 -> 46
Scores: 1170 -> 1159
Min FPS: 11.7 -> 11.9
Max FPS: 114.9 -> 118.1

After all that I tried to push it for everything i could and the best score stable I could get was the following

My final results were:
AMD Phenom X4 965 @ 4Ghz
4Gb ram
After i found my stable limit I then went back to the stock 6950 bios settings:

XFX 6950 bios (800/1250) vs 6970 Bios (855/1450)

Unfortunately I would have loved to be able to hit some of the core clock values that some of the others in this forum are able to get but unfortunately thats the luck of the draw.
I didnt buy the 6950 over a 6970 in the hope I could get 6970 performance for the price of a 6950. I instead opted for the 6950 over a 6870 (price difference of ~£30).

The best overclock i could get to complete a heaven run was 865Mhz but it had a 50% completion ratio where every 4 times id run the heaven benchmark only 2 of them would complete the benchmark without heaven crashing. 855 seems to be the stable overlcock so far. Wierdly enough the memory clock is sitting at 1450Mhz and it would probably go further. I researched the whole web and most people were getting bad ram chips vs bad cores.
Yes i did try 3 different Bios' (XFX, Asus & ATI), all wont let me go past the 865 mark without crashing during a benchmark. Unlucky for me not to be able to get stock 6970 speeds (880 core) and obviously there are some that are getting over 900 speeds. Overall Im very happy with the purchase. An 18% increase (in score and in FPS) is still quite a substantial increase for nothing.

Can the OP please update the first page to take into account the easier methods of flashing and flashing back that i posted

Much easier way of flashing guys....

Follow this link for info and this one to download all the files ready to go.

It works perfectly and even runs a backup of your original bios.

Was thinking about getting another 6950 and flashing it so I can xfire them.

However I won't have the money spare for a couple of months and it sounds as if the revised 6950 being released before then will be laser cut to stop people flashing them to a 6970.

Does anyone think there is much truth to this?

Will be a bit gutted if it turns out to be true!
