Unlock your ATI 6950 to a 6970 Thread

Easyrider - nice job, well done.
So you think you have a 6970 now - but it's barely different to your OC'd 6950, so the question is, can you overclock your 6950?

Me too - my 6970 is still with OCUK, I'm wondering whether to call and ask for them to change it to the 6950 . Oh what to do...

I'm in the same boat.

Bit p1**ed off with AMD really. There is now no difference between the two cards apart from the price? Great work AMD....

I wonder if OcUK will keep the 5% discount I got for ordering the other day and apply it to a 6950 - I spent the extra £60 as a treat to myself and get slapped in the face with this the next day.....:(

Your 6970 will have a higher binned GPU, Memory chips and be guaranteed to run at those specs.

The flashed 6950's won't be guaranteed and only time will tell really whether they really stand the test of time.

When you are buying CPU's and GPU's and you are an overclocker default speeds are largely irrelevant, and you are really paying any extra for higher rated chips.

Yeah you said yesterday - appreciate the info. I'm then hoping that everyone's 6950 flashed* stop working and they have to revert to default.

I don't want to wish lower performance on others but I paid like 20% more for a tiny bit extra performance and I didn't need to......meh - plug and play and be happy I will - who cares about money?

Thats nice:rolleyes: A really nice attitude to have in the overclocking community. Who's ethic is primarily perfromance for free.

This justification of yours is starting to grate a bit I'm afraid.

I'm sorry you took it like that but I don't really care becasue you have misinterpreted.

I think I'm being quite fair.

It's my malcontent with AMD not the lucky people who hopefully can get 6970performance at 6950 prices at a stable state.

Whats the problem with AMD. They could have laser cut the internals. And they haven't.

You made your choice so just enjoy your new card.

Not nervous about flashing the 6950, but concerned about wating £50 on the 6970 - that's £50 I could do with saving (spending elsewhere :D )

Once we've the tools the 6970 should clock further than a 6950, mine does 940mhz on the gpu at stock volts so I'd guess 1000mhz isn't out of the question with a voltage boost.

I can't see a flashed 6950 being able to safely do that....

Easy easy :) Like you say, overclocking gets us a boost in performance for free, but you can understand it's irritating for those that can't join in (ie, 6970 owners).

Exactly - overclocking is something that everyone should be able to do. This situ however applies to 6950 owners and not 6970 owners.

Where's the 'ethics' in that, please tell me....

Ethics aren't involved at all. I'm not sure why you're even mentioning ethics...?

ATI have trod on a banana or two recently. First the 6970 failed to live to the hype (almost everyone expected GTX580 like performance), and now even it's hobbled little bother can match it's performace. £200 for a "6970" sounds like a complete bargain if all or most of these 6950's unlock. I bet ATI will get the laser cutters out pretty sharpish to prevent a complete collapse of 6970 sales.

edit: but so far only one person seems to have done it so maybe pie in the sky...

Also perhaps breaking your card would be a bit of a boner since one is covered by a warranty at 6970 and a 6950 upgraded to a 6970 isn't :p

I really don't think I need to explain it - it's pretty damn obvious but....

It's like with BMW 3 series: (this is fictitious)

Let's say the 320i can be tuned for free to become a 325i

But the 325i cannot be tuned in that way for free to become a 330i?

Can you not see the problem?

You made your choice so just enjoy your new card? Nice attitude? ROFL

This is using my new *ahem* 6970 xfire setup.
