**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

I'm using Rainsport 3's and have now had 3 pairs fitted. Excellent tyre plenty of grip in the wet or dry my only complaint is that they wear quickly, but you 7mm of tread and they are cheaper than competitors.

Highly recommended though.

I'll run mine pretty low, circa 2mm - I would never consider replacing a tyre at 4mm unless I wanted rid of the thing anyway, might consider at 2.5-3mm if it was the middle of winter and chucking it down every single day heavily.

On the other hand i'd never aim to change actually at the limit, as quite frankly I don't fancy picking up points as well as the potential performance drop off

I normally change at around 2mm also. The only time a tyre with more tread depth becomes better is when you are going through standing water or going so fast that the tyre grooves arent able to displace the volume of water quickly enough.

In all other occasions, even driving on a wet or damp road, a tyre with less tread performs better.

I must say, I'm surprised to hear Michelin say what they have. Normally tyre manufacturers would try and convince you that you need a new set of tyres every week to maintain the performance, but Michelin are saying the complete opposite, which is refreshingly honest. But the other thing that has me confused is that no matter how much tyre tech has come, a tyre with 3mm tread will resist aquaplaning better than the same tyre with 1.6mm.

Surely the reason for that is entirely obvious? As the tyre tends towards being a slick, the amount of water it can displace diminishes. No matter what you do, that simple fact will over-ride any technological gains made in the tyre construction.

What are your thoughts on the HANKOOK Ventus P2s?

I'm desperate for a replacement set of fronts and these do look good. There are however a considerable amount of buyers complaining about road noise as the tyres get older.

Otherwise I'll settle for the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3

Just got rid of a set of Dunlop Gtradtrek At20's on the Hilux, my god what a terrible tyre!

Appalling grip in both the wet and the dry, litterally like ice in the wet. back end sliding around at 10 mph on roundabouts.

Offroad on anything other than gravel or loose rock they were poor, mud turns them to slicks straight away.

Only lasted 20k on the rears.

Just had fittd BF Goodrich Longtrails, hopefully they might be a tad better

...

Which is exactly what I was saying...

I was questioning what Michelin said when they stated that a tyre on 1.6mm should perform well when even compared to a 3mm tyres due to developments in tyre tech.

If I was in your position, the issue for me would be whether or not I take a chance on the Ventus tyres, for no benefit at all, or whether I stick with solid, proven performers like the F1A3 and know that I was buying one of the top 3 road tyres currently on sale.

new rears needed on my e92 330i size 255/35 R18.

Looking at Michelin Pilot Sport 4's.

Have seen on black circles for £140 per tyre fully fitted with triple club car points.

Tyre leader £136 per tyre only delivered.

Any where got a better deal? my uncle has a garage so i can get fitted for free.

I have never bought tyres online so have no idea of any reputable sites :p

Thanks,

Put the 225/55 R16 ContiWinterContact 850Ps on the other day. WOW much more comfortable ride.

Shame it's +12C outside :p

I'm trying to buy 265 40 18's and 245 40 on a e92 M3

Considering the PSS or the Hankook evo 2 tyres.

Anyone got any other recommendations?

One tyre is from, arguably, THE leading premium tyre brand (with proven performance to match) and the other is from a mid range tyre supplier. They come at very different price points (the Hankook is almost 2/3 the price of the Michelin).

The only other road tyre I'd consider putting on an M3 would be a Continental CS5P, but I still wouldn't do that as they wear so quickly compared to the PSS.

PSS all the way for me.

I don't want anything to do with continental after a pair of rears lasted 3k on my m5.

I was under the impression that hankook are now firmly I'm the high end market and not a mid range manufacturer anymore. They seem to be oe fitment on various European brands now too.

The hankooks seem to get good ratings from the press that's why I considered them.

Yes - but things like Pirelli PZero Rosso's were OE fitment and they were pretty terrible tyres. Hankooks might be OE fitment on run of the mill dagdag business editions etc - but until they are standard fitment on M3s/M5s/RS cars, then you can't really read much into that

True but they still get good write ups unlike the pirellis
