**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

So help me here (again....)

Are the PS4's the replacement for the PSS's?

I need to order 4 and I can get 4 PSS's in the size I need for Tuesday, but I don't want to go down this route if the PS4 is going to be the better tyre.

Thoughts?

Ah OK. I think I will go with MPSS right now then as I know they are a good performance tyre and I need tyres before December as I've a track day at Silverstone and right now my tyres are borked. The price isn't as mad as I expected, less than 900 notes for 4 which is good I feel. Will order in the morning and then arrange to get them fitted by Shorade as I need a few bits of TLC on the R8 after some hard miles :)

Uniroyal RainSport 3

360hp/330ftlb Audi TT S

absolutely killed it in the wet today

They're a crap feeling tyre though, sidewalls are too soft, and they're a bit squirmy. I found dry grip average, wet grip was pretty good.

But then I've been continuing on my merry way with AD08R with no drama, doesn't mean they're a fantastic wet weather tyre though

This has always been the issue with Goodyear. They make a great all round, all weather road tyre, but they start to fall apart at real pace due to soft sidewalls and this is why Goodyears never really get a look in as a track day tyre. F10 530D perfect, M3 nah.

So that, like his complete hatred for diesel, he can clean up and satisfy his hatred for RFT's also. Just wait until you get a puncture Fox, that would have normally been repairable with ordinary tyres...

Since we are here though (tyre thread), and I am looking for tyres for the 16's for the Alhambra, has anyone ever heard anything about the new Avon WT7 Snow's? I am considering trying them out, mostly because they are new and cheap. Although I have generally run Conti winters, and they are very good, they are roughly twice the price.

Well, I thought I would bite the bullet and order a set anyway. I'll see what they are like this winter, and report back. 205/55/16's for less than £200 delivered seemed like to good a deal to pass up.

Doubt it. I completely believe what mjt said, but as I said previously, it's likely to be the cold and wet as this is when I myself have noticed the performance drops off

...

I stand by my comment that wet weather performance on the MPSS is very good. Extreme wet weather and cold wet weather performance is where it doesn't perform as well as some of the competition.
Pretty much this. The MPSS had done 15,000 miles when I took them off last month and I had noticed them getting slightly worse in the wet compared to when they were new. However, I had F1A2s on a Z3 and CS5s on an S3 before so I don't have a FWD-FWD comparison unfortunately.

I still stand by my comments that the MPSS are an excellent tyre, even in the wet. I was just more surprised at how well the TS850Ps coped. The TS830Ps I had before were not this good in the wet. I was just commenting on how much Continental have raised the bar. It's extremely impressive.
FWIW, I don't need to justify my winter tyre purchase. I need winter tyres due to where I drive.

How are these coping? My concern with cheaper tyres (or rather, anything other than ContiWinterContacts) is not how they fare in wintery conditions, but rather how they do the other 90% of the time they're fitted...

The wheels i have on the Octavia now came.with Dunlop wintersport 5's which I've left on for the moment.

They're....ok in more normal, wet/dry but reasonably cold weather, (its been fairly mild here so far, lots of days where it'll sit somewhere between around 6 and 10 degrees) letting go noticeably earlier than the ps4 but still pretty acceptable.

I wouldn't say they were any more impressive in regular weather than the likes of a premium contact or efficient grip but obviously come into their own when it's wet and close to freezing or below

I had the wintersport 4D or whatever they were a few years back on the Passat. And agree. Obviously no PS4 in dry conditions, but so long as the temp was below 10 deg, they performed good enough. They are not a summer tyre, nor a "premium" tyre, so I didn't expect them to perform as well in such conditions. But winter tyres are for winter use, where the speeds driven will be slower anyway.

I've only done around 100 miles in the Avons thus far. It has been hooring cold here though, with morning temps well below zero. They have been fine. Feeling a little floaty though just now, but that's probably a combination between having driven the GTI all last week, and the low profile 18" Conti's that were on the Alhambra previously.

I'll need a few hundred more miles on them at least before I can start to form a proper opinion on them. And it probably doesn't help the comparison that the front conti's were on the legal limit when they came off. There is certainly more grip on these Avons at the moment.
