**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

They'll need some mileage on them to start giving their best. The steering feel on the MPSS is it's strongest point, yet the weakest point on the CSC5 so it should be much better with the new tyres.

Yea think they need more running in as I remember the steering feel being better from my last use of them.

I have Conti SC6 on my Z4 and in performance terms they are very impressive, although not so much in the cold. They are now getting a bit low on the back (4mm ish) and obviously the weather has turned and the wet weather performance in particular has gone from absolutely staggering to fairly average. When new I took the car for an Evo Triangle lap or two in torrential rain (but 10c+) and had no traction issues. In the cold and wet this week, I couldn't even have the car in Sport+/M because pulling for an on-throttle upshift would light up the rears.

Wear is about average - certainly not up to the claims of the MPSS longevity but far exceeds what people say about them only lasting a few thou - mine have done at least 10k now of quite spirited driving and still have a while to go on the back!

I literally have no idea what tyres to put on the 535d. None at all :(

Thanks, cheers for the info. Think I'm going to wait until the PS4S come out Jan and see what the prices are like.

I bought a 2016 Passat a couple of weeks ago which has done 10k miles on Continental Sport Contact 5s since new.

The front drivers side tire is showing uneven wear with 6/5/4 mm on the tread depth indicators (from inside to outside). For comparison the passenger side front is on 5.5/5/5 and the rears still have loads of tread left.

I was pretty surprised that the tread was down to 4mm in so few miles but is this reasonable for a large 140ps diesel car?

How much uneven wear is generally considered an issue? It's on an approved used scheme so i'm debating on whether to push for a tracking check/adjustment with the VW dealer.

Noticed Dunlop Sport Maxx losing traction in close to freezing temperatures. 27 months, 13K miles, plenty of tread, FWD car.

Actually quite unnerving as they feel like they have no grip. It's only really when moving off in first, flooring it in second or going round a 90 degree corner at 15mph+ or so. I'm sure this wasn't happening last year. Fortunately temperatures have picked back up in the last week. Should note that these tyres are great otherwise.

I had those Dunlops on a set of wheels I bought a while back. Granted, they were old and probably past their best, but they really were shockingly bad in cold / wet conditions. After a couple of sideways moments I changed them, even though they had around 4mm left.

I was thinking it might just be driving too aggressively.

Haven't really had problems in the wet in normal temperatures.

I did the same with my Mk3 Mondeo as the Dunlops were bad in the cold for me, wet was OK-ish and dry was fine. Swapped to Michelin Primacy's IIRC and they were much better but much noisier.

I have a E93 330D which will need tyres all around. Currently have run flats which are noisy, uncomfortable and crazy expensive so I want to get rid of them.

What would you chaps recommend at roughly £100/£110 a corner?

Front: 225 35 19
Rear: 255 30 19

I wouldn't really recommend anything - just isn't enough of a budget for anything decent.

Even the cheap end of things is going to be £100 fronts, £150 rears e.g.

= £482.72 for Kumho Ecsta Le Sport KU39

Whereas something actually quite good would be £694.70 for Conti Sport Contact 6:

or Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 are similar prices in those sizes

You are not going to get a good set of tyres for a car with those sizes for 400 quid.

I thought that would be the case. I'm just using your opinions to explain to my brother that you can't get anything decent for that price as he doesn't want me to spend £500+

Getting premium fronts for £110 a corner isn't too undoable but the rears - no chance.

The Kumho KU39 is the best in that budget - £90 ea for the rears, £80 ea for the fronts delivered from Tyreleader.co.uk.

Fitting is obviously on top of this which is normally around £15 per tyre so £400 all in inc fitting.

Looking at tyres for the Lolvo (V50, 205/50/17)

CSC5 still gonna be the best bet for a mile muncher?

You can get the newer CSC6 for about £2 more (meant to be a very good tyre and a big step forward from the CSC5) or the Goodyear Eagle F1A3 for about £10 more. Both are current gen tyres and better than the CSC5.
