**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

I took photos on Wednesday night when I was pumping up the slow puncture and the damage wasn't there then! Also the same night I ordered the tyres.

Not sure what the ATS guy is doing here? Perhaps a celebratory dance after butchering my wheels?

I just bought a 2010 RAV4 and the dealers put two different tyres on the front. One Nexen and one ‘Autogrip’, with different tread depths too. Any recommendations for this vehicle? It’s got the 17” wheels.

Only brand I’d want to avoid is Falken, as I found the wore very quickly on my Octavia. The engine is already pretty loud, so some ‘quiet’ tyres would be welcome.

Nexen are alright, Autogrip are proper ditchfinders though. :D

If the Nexen is new you could just get another to match it?

Do you have to get the P7 for the dealer to pay for one of them? If so I'd probably do that, can't argue with £25 a corner really... Unless you are concerned you will be finding their limitations all the time based on your expeirence. If you can get them to fit the Asy 5's for a negligible amount more, I would definitely do that instead.

Late Reply - They fitted the Pirelli P7’s and I can’t complain really as overall ended up with 4 new tyres for £60 essentially. The tyres are probably more capable than my driving but a friend at work with the same car has Asy 5’s and even as a passenger they fill me with more confidence in the corners. I find with the Pirelli it doesn’t take much even in warm dry conditions for them to squeal and turn heads when pulling away at Junctions with a heavy foot unfortunately but a part of me enjoys that I must admit.

Was slightly annoyed though as two guys who changed the tyres seemed nice so I tipped them only to get home and notice original wheel weights and vibrations, I called and ask if they had balanced them to be told they was put on the machine and within tolerance... I went elsewhere and they were very far from within tolerance but I was reimbursed by the place I bought the car from.

Hopefully this is relevant in this thread as it’s Alloy/Tyre related question.

Currently have 225 45 17” but wanting to change my alloys and go for 225 40 18” therefore would this affect my Speedometer? I used an online calculator and it seems fine plus my registration suggests either tyre size as-well as different models of the same car comes with 18s as standard.

The outer diameter of the wheel and tyre package will be the same or very similar, if you use the size of tyre fitted to the equivelant model which came with 18's as standard.

This is a useful site.

That site gives a really good detailed comparison and has reassured me that it would be fine. 20 MPH = 20.1 on 18’s for example.

Thank you!

Think he is doing the haka to psych himself up for the highly physically and emotionally demanding job of changing a pair of tyres on a Ford Focus

Just bought 2 Goodyear Assymetric 5s to fit on the front of my E89. Getting fitted on Saturday. I already changed the rears to Assymetric 3s (got a puncture and 5s weren't available at the size of my rears), so all 4 tyres will be non run-flats (currently front are run-flats), which should improve the ride as well.

Looking at some tyre repair kits, should something happen, and came across Holts Tyreweld. Anyone had experience with it? Anything else that might be better? I do have roadside assistance, but this is just if I need to get somewhere in a rush.

Seems to review well but my brother has the Mazda provided variant of that and it wasn't very good at all when he actually needed it (it is a slightly different product though).

What was wrong with it and what exact product was it, do you know?

I've only ever had cause to use any similar product once, holts tyreweld in a little can, and it didn't work. But it had no chance really because it was a motorbike tyre which had slipped on the rim.

It was after he changed the wheels but before he did the wheel alignment. For some reason they reversed it off the ramps (when this was shot) and drove it back on again.

Interesting comment from mechanic who just did my MOT - advisory(expected)

many so called premium tyres are showing cracking in the tread channels , after a few years, to wit, my goodyear efficient grip's about 3 years 25K old,

for that reason, he was more hot on the chinese options ? he said there is little mileage in trying to exploit guarantee/warranty.
