**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

New tyres fitted - whilst obviously it hasn't done anything to fix the wheelspin, (although have a matched pair on the front it does now at least spin in a straight line :p) the back of the car definitely feels a lot firmer and more "planted", especially in the wet weather today :)

Thoughts / experiences on (100Y) XL RG TL vs (96Y). Michellin PS5.

I understand the speed ratings already but don't think I've ever used reinforced tyres, my only bias is they're around £50 cheaper per corner. Ratings on paper are the same so should the only difference be improved wear? given I have no need for a reinforced tyre and they would be designed to tolerate more load.

Thanks.

I'm running XL rated tyres on my MX-5, no big deal.

Hello,

Looking for some new tyres, currently on cross climate 2's. They really have performed well, down to about 2.5mm of tread and they are really starting to struggling in the wet now.

225/40/18 and was looking at Bridgestone Turanza 6, PS5's or just putting some Cross climate 2's back on. Was wondering if anyone has any experince with the Turanza's or PS5's coming from a cross climate,

if anyone has any experince with the Turanza's

I've not tried the Turanza 6s - I've done 1000s of miles on Turanza t005s - from the reviews it looks like the only changes are an overall improvement of wet performance to bring them inline with newer tyres than the t005 and a slight noise reduction.

Negatives:

The t005 were not noisy tyres but the noise they made was a constant dull droning which was a bit irritating after awhile - dunno if they've improved that.
I've had premature crazy cracking between the tread blocks on more than one set.
When it was properly dry as in dusty dry and warm they felt vague and heavy, though most days in the UK don't get like that.
Quite soft sidewalls which don't seem to handle the lateral forces of high centre of gravity/heavier type vehicles to an ideal level - which might be contributing to the premature cracking.

On the positive side:

The rolling resistance, wet grip and control when braking I found excellent - few very tyres I felt as confident in when say passing a lorry on a dual-carriageway with torrential rain and standing water.

I can't say how much they've changed with the 6, but from reading around I suspect some of the negatives are still there.

What car and how do you drive?

Thanks for the opinion.

Went down from 19s 8.5j to 18s 8j and man the front end feels good. Plenty of grip with the GY ASM6 + far better steering feel than the PS4S.

Is that an Alpina? Some pictures of that please!

Still liking my MPS5's, sure-footed and predictable in the wet and good in the dry. Not sure about tread depth remaining exactly but they still look to have plenty. Had a slow puncture repaired last month and no other issues so far.

Something like the PS5 would be fine, but nothing wrong with sticking with Cross Climates if you're happy with them and prefer the all season approach.

The question everyone seems to have avoided asking is does he want an all season tyre? If so, the Pilot Sport 5 is not going to be suitable.

My mum's Tiguan on 235/50 R19 requires new tyres all round, they are cracking but plenty of tread left. Current are Pirelli Scorpion Verde, alternative seems to be the crossclimate 2. Tempted to go for the pirelli again but any thoughts on either?
Naturally, it does not get 'performance driven', just around town and some motorway miles.

I currently have Goodyear Eagle F1 (5's I believe) on my M135i. My fronts are a little over 3mm in depth at the moment, but I have a nail in one so am thinking of just replacing both now.

Can anyone advise if I should go for the same again, or if there is something of a similar price that is particularly recommended?

if you’re happy just go with new good years, they’re very good tyres.

They seem to do well in reviews with only very expensive tyres having all around better performance - close(ish) alternatives seem to be Pilot Sport 4/5 or Conti Premium Contact 6/7. Despite being popular tyres I don't really have any experience with the Pilot Sport, I do quite like the Premium Contacts as they seem to combine solid performance with a well balanced feeling of control - something not all tyres have despite potentially having better on paper stats.

I cannot fault my Pilot Sport 5’s on my 428i. They weren’t cheap though! As Rroff has said, you can’t really go wrong with the current premium tyres from GY, Continental or Michelin, they’re all very good.
