**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

My sister has asked me to help her source a decent price for 4 new tyres for her 2023 Porsche Macan.
She was about to pull the trigger on some generic crap tyres as the price was good (!) I've had words and hopefully she's seen the error of her ways! :D

wow...just wow...macan with generic ling longs...

This is the problem, she wanted new tyres, 3 on advisory (2.5mm) so opted for all four but knowing they'd be expensive, was looking for a cheaper option!

I bet it's more common than not these days, get it on finance and don't care what rubber they throw on it or pads they fit etc as long as it's the best price they can find.
The really daft thing here is she owns it outright, i.e. the cost of the tyres in the grand scheme of things really shouldn't - nor frankly isn't - an issue...

But yes, her initial thinking was cheaper the better!

In fairness (which still makes me scratch my head as to why she wants never mind needs a Macan Turbo S) she is now looking at Michelin...

And yes, she swims in a very different pond to the one I inhabit!

Sadly I'm the kind of person who notices what kind of tyres are on a car without even intentionally doing it - so many expensive SUVs these days and I've never even heard of the tyre brand(s) on them and you look them up and the reviews are horrendous.

Turbo S aswell! So does she care about performance or not lol.

Ahhh, the ever reliable impartiality of an owners club, where they perform good comparative performance testing between tyres with a nice data set at the end :D

As in real world usage vs companies who pay the most £££ to come out better in tests?

'Real world usage' as judged by people of totally unknown qualification, experience or skill.

All tyres are 'good enough' until the day you need to do an emergency stop or take emergency avoiding action and you go ploughing on another 10m into the back of another car whilst your ABS pump near enough explodes or end up facing backwards - that's when all the stories about invisible diesel spills etc. start appearing because it's definitely never the cheap crap tyres people were using.

Kind of related to this, one thing which does concern me as I tend to put wet weather bias tyres on my vehicles - it gives you a much higher level of confidence in atrocious conditions but then if you get to the point they do let go you could be doing more speed or more complex manoeuvrers than you otherwise would.

Having done stuff like passing multiple lorries on the A303 dual-carriageway in slick wet conditions there is no way I'd be putting some tyres *cough* on my vehicles - the difference in margins when driving sensibly is crazy.

Many years ago I used to drive the exact same route home each day. I'd get to a specific roundabout that was on an incline where you'd need to pull out quick. In wet conditions I'd always get wheelspin as I tried to nip out. Up until that point I'd always bought cheap tyres with a though of how bad can they be. One year I switched to a more premium tyre and the extra level of grip I'd get there in wet conditions was unbelievably better. I've never gone back since and I always tell people to buy a decent brand of tyre.

Check some tyre reviews videos out.

They have a Youtube channel, some of the tests are very interesting, especially when the budget tyres which are so often lauded on internet forums perform comically bad.

Can't remember his username and I don't think he posts here any more, but John's website & youtube channel are excellent

Not really, whilst her previous car was an A35 Merc, to say she's a petrol head couldn't be further from the mark.

I think she'd be fine with something like a diesel Focus and why on earth she hasn't got something like it is beyond me.

Conti PremiumContact 7 job done :s (though personally I think the 6 is better).
