**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

Sorry, just one last question. Looking at Kwik-Fit, they only seem to have premium contact 5s with speed rating V, is it worth going for the W rated ones ross26 linked to? If so does anyone know of a place to get them fitted in Exeter if I order from Camskill?

Wouldn't mind paying the extra usually but with a wedding in June the car throwing up an £800 bill before xmas, and now needs the cambelt and full service due it is not a great time for me to have damaged the side wall!! Bank balance is rather tight!

Was hoping I had come across some ultra bargain tyres, but may look at the hankooks.

I got two conti premium 5 fitted, very impressed so far, try best buy tyres online, 205/55 /16 w
I got for about £82 quid each iirc that includes fitting at a local garage that you choose online.

I'm not planning on it, but I just wondered if there's any advantage to having anything higher than about P for road use as realistically I won't have need of anything over that

My concern on this from before is whether your insurance could be considered void if you were in an accident and you were found to have tyres below the manufacturer's recommendation, even V-W, which is just one band apart. I ended up playing it safe and getting the higher rated one for an extra £10-15 a corner.

I've found sometimes the higher speed rating ones are the same price or cheaper also for the same tyre..

The premium 5's I recently bought I selected the 'audi' spec ones rather than the vanilla ones as they were 2 or 3 pounds cheaper..

Having said that, I think I ended up with generic premium contact 5, I've not checked the side wall info further than size, brand and model but i don't recall seeing a manufacturer specific suffix /prefix..

Can anyone tell me the difference between these 2 sets of tyres:

http://www.camskill.co.uk/m61b0s134...Eff_:_E_Wet_Grip:_A_NoiseClass:_2_Noise:_70dB

Fuel Efficiency: E

and..

http://www.blackcircles.com/catalogue/goodyear/eagle-f1-asymmetric-2/225/40/R18/Y/92/

Fuel Efficiency: C

I've asked Blackcircles and they told me that different batches have different ratings.

Surely the same type of tyre can't be C on fuel for 1 batch and E for another?

Yes it can, thats the beauty of such poor testing, they can go up if they tweak it ever so slightly.

really? that's annoying.

If I buy 2 more ASY2's, they'll be 2 E rated and 2 C rated..

How much difference are you looking at between a C and E rated fuel eff. tyre anyway? Or is it not even worth bothering about

Lol. It's not even worth bothering about!

It's the same tyre though isn't it? I don't know if it's even marked physically any different, I doubt it though. New rating faq here: http://www.blackcircles.com/general/tyre-labelling/tyre-label
Short version:
  • Rolling resistance A to G has a 7.5% (with some variance) difference.
  • Wet Breaking distance A to G is 18M
  • No one cares about noise unless you're over 60.
Nothing below D is used so from a grade D to A tyre you'd gain around 4% fuel saving and stop 12 metres quicker. In theory. In reality I suspect it's a bit different.

I am about to purchase 4 Michelin pilot exalto pe2's for my MX5, hopefully they will be better than the Toyo T1R's and comparable to the Eagle F1 GSD3's.
