Yeah I know that's an expensive quote, I've had a PS3 fitted for £126 before in Christchurch so will definitely be giving them a call first. (found £105 fitted using black circles)

I will be getting both rears done. I'm tempted to get PS3 as they're on the front too- one has done about 10k and the other about 12
 
2) He suggested three tyres: Pilot Sport V3 as that is what is already on there (£160) but he isn't keen on them as you pay for the brand name;

You don't 'pay for the brand name' really - there is a small element of that but mostly you are paying for a better performing tyre. The Avon is an internet-hero tyre like the Falken's were years ago, tyres people convince themselves are just as good as better tyres because the price is better. There is nothing wrong with them, but they don't offer the performance of a Pilot Super Sport or a Contisport Contact 5P or whatever.

That said I'm not sure I'd be going Pilot Sport 3, I'd look at a ContiSport 5 or an Eagle F1A2. Both of which are likely cheaper.

Depending on size and availability then Pilot Sport 4's and Goodyear F1A3's are now becoming available, so something to consider.
 
How long do F1A2's tend to last before they are down to a "safe minimum" (say 2.5 - 3mm)?

And would you say that in a 215/45/17 size on my Corolla, it is worth paying the £68 per tyre for F1A2's over the £59 per tyre for RainSport 3's?

Do F1A2's have flange/rim protection?

Obviously depends on driving style but on any high performance front wheel drive I would say 12-15k for fronts, and 20-25k for rears.

Yes - as Fox would say, the Rainsports are another internet-hero tyre that get a couple of reasonable reviews and then the low cost propels recommendations far more than they should. By no means a bad tyre, but nowhere near the same league as F1A2/CSC5 etc

F1A2 is an excellent tyre. I really preferred them over the Pilot Sport 2 and Sessantas I had before and going by user reviews, many others do too. Good rim protection, excellent tread wear pattern and rate and excellent grip in both wet and dry.
 
I'm considering going for a set of F1A2s for the m3 later this year. PSS are great, but I don't feel I'm using everything they have to offer over the F1A2 on the road.

Although having said that, the PSS wear rate on the rears have been more than impressive. When I got the car at 61k miles, the tyres had done around 1000 miles. Car is now at 77.3k and the tread has plenty of room to go before the wear marker is reached.

Maybe the extra cost for the PSS is useful considering their longevity.
 
Purchased an MX5 with a mismatch of accelera, Mohawk and sunyew tyres on so it needs sorting.
The tyre size is 205/50/16.

I was considering Rainsport3's (Wet weather orientated), Dunlop Bluresponse's (are these MPG and efficiency orientated?) or Vredestein Sportrack 5's (Supposedly excellent in the dry).

Not really a tyre size with excellent choice to be honest.

I was more than happy with Rainsport3s on mine, they aren't the wonder tyre the hype leads you to believe but they certainly are capable enough and never left me in a brown pants situation

My only complaint was the sidewalls which made the front end feel a little disconnected and the wear rate (5-6k out of a set of rears)

I replaced them with AD08Rs today

I'm sure it was 205/50. I best have a look before I purchase though, it's a Mk3 2.0.

This was my logic behind paying more for the PSS.
 
No idea on PS3 but it isn't a UHP tyre so wouldn't have thought it be as good?

The PS2 wear rate and pattern is very good.
 
Hmmm... How much of a difference are we talking? Does that wear rate apply to the PS2/PS3?

At least according to Blackcircles, Michelin claim 20% more mileage for PS3 (and PS2), although PS4 are not labelled similarly - maybe suggesting more of a focus on outright performance for PS4 (rather than longevity as well)
