Up Yours DSA!

If you're just renewing your picture after 10 years which you have to do, you pay regardless of whether you surrender the old one or not. That's what I was doing.

If they can't manage to keep a proper record of what I am licensed to drive despite the astronomical test fess they charge etc, then I'm not sending them my license if I can avoid it!

My understanding is that most of the screw ups are when people send their licence off for a new photo or address. I recently renewed my photo and ticked the box saying I'd lost the old licence and kept it. I didn't trust them with it so had anything untoward happened could have miraculously found the old one as proof of entitlement.

This is rather a good idea nice one bat MCN should be told of this :)

I can't believe people are actually retaking their test. Shocking.

Exactly, this is absolutely shocking that people who have held a license for 20 years are being made to take their test again. I would have kicked up a right fuss, taken them to court and even got watchdog involved in this.

The DVLA say even the original licence still aint proof , if its not on there records then as far as they are concerned you aint got a licence

Well if that is the case then those lot need to be reported and serious action taken against them. I can't believe in this day and age stuff like this is actually happening. I thought the OP was on the wind up but this is just ridiculous. I don't think I even kept records of me passing the test, I didn't think I ever needed to.

My mum recently sent hers off to have her points taken off but I'm glad I didn't read this thread before hand otherwise I wouldn't of let her send it and told her to just keep it as it is. Hers came back safe and well.

jazz that is watchdog in the links i posted
they have done two shows about it and mcn have done loads of articles about it
the problem is that the DVLA wont admit they have made a mistake and like said the only proof they will accept that you have passed is the original pass cert

not sure if it is said in the links i posted or in mcn that the DVLA said photo copy's and original's aint proof only the original pass cert

unreal aint it

I think that must be wrong as I know of someone who has used an expired licence as proof.

How can they possibly argue it? I Don't doubt that they'd try it on though.

Another option is to go to your local DVLA office to do this stuff.

You shouldn't have to endure the hassle and queuing, but could at least get the desk staff there to verify what you have in writing.

they have your original licence when you send it back anyway but still say if it aint on there records you aint passed

ill see if i can find where i see that

I think the trouble is we're trying to apply logic here where it is an alien concept!

Yeah, you dont get anywhere with them. Its like talking to a brick wall.

At first I wasn't really worried when I spotted the mistake, as assumed it would be easy to rectify. Then, 6 months later after countless phone calls and letters it began to sink in that they just werent in the slightest bit interested. Its all very well saying you'd fight them in court etc, but at the end of the day as far as the Police are concerned you're driving without a license, and frankly I just didnt want to take the risk so put it down to experience and grudgingly retook mine - in all honesty the enforced refresher course probably did me good!

I recently replaced my old paper license with a new style license and it was unbelievably easy and painless. I did it all on-line and didn't even have my old paper license to hand (it had all but fallen to pieces). I simply filled in a few forms on the DVLA website (name, address, DOB etc), entered my passport number and it pulled my passport photo and details from the passport office's database. I then entered my credit card details to pay for said license. Two weeks later my new license dropped through my letter box.

The whole process literally took me about 5 minutes.

Just lucky they still had my license details safe on their database I guess :/

just make the licences a 1 off, until you're 60 and then you change it.

i don't understand why you have to send bits off to be renewed all the time. seems like a lot of money wastage.

my belgian one has got a picture on it from the day after i took my test when i was 18, and it never expires. much better :p

Just to balance and restore a little bit of faith; I received my updated licence back today, along with new photo, from DVLA. It took just under 3 weeks.

They still haven't banked my £20 cheque though...

This is unbelievable that the DVLA can deny your existence when they printed your photo license and paper counter part. This proves you were on their database and did have a license.

So am I right in saying that for a small fee you can get another paper counter part sent out if you say you have lost your old one?

Also under the FOI act can I write in and ask for the info they have stored on their database about me? And if you can what reason would one give for wanting their info in writing?

You don't need a reason, just ask for all information they have stored on you. They are entitled to charge upto £10 to cover administration costs.
