Upgrade 9yr old Titan Scythe 4770k OC PC

I’m not sure the RTX3080 could offer that kind of performance. Might get close to 100.

For the cooler I’d go Zalman cnps17x on a Ryzen, for Intel a cnps20x or d15.

Thank you, I’m thinking of either Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE at the moment, DH-15 looks great but 3x the price!

No harm in emailing Alpenfohn and asking for one (or if any of their existing upgrade kits might work), but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Review of the thermalright cooler mentioned above.

You can use the cooler included in the box if you're desperate, but it'll be loud.

There's an AM4 kit for the K2, because it used the same mounting bracket as the Olymp.

OcUK used to sell it, I don't know if they still do, but I contacted Alpenfohn and they provided one free of charge. I'm not sure if the AM4 cooler attachment points are the same as AM5 but I think I read that it was? (edit: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/alpe...mp-atlas-and-matterhorn-series-hs-059-al.html)

As for LGA1700, I'm contemplating that upgrade myself and I'm reasonably certain that heatsink could fit if you file the X-Clamp that goes behind the motherboard between the 2nd and 3rd screw positions, you'd possibly also need a second set of plastic spacers to adjust for the Z-Height of the LGA1700 CPUs though... All that is prolly not exactly up the OP's alley but I thought I'd throw it out there in case they are DIY inclined.

the k2 mount doom is a very good cooler...it'll be a shame if OP had to change it just because it lacks the mounting for S1700/AM5
Yes I remember OCUK recommending it as it was the best air cooler you could buy at the time. I’m trying to find comparisons to the others mentioned but it seems as though Alpenfohn has been forgotten about! One of the things I don’t like is you cannot access the ram whatsoever once it’s installed. Which is also forcing me to ensure for the upgrade I’ll likely need low/normal profile ram design probably even if I change to one of the other coolers.

it's as good as the noctua d14 (predecessor to the d15)

It might not perform as well today. The industry has progressed a long way since the days of quad cores.

A pair of the best fans in the world are included. The build quality and design of Noctua is also top notch.
and yet a $40 cooler performs just as well

unless you're telling me that the build design and quality of the d14 is now obsolete?

You are paying for a touch more than just a name.

The core layout of the latest chips is very different from Intels old quad core design. Unless you are saying that’s definitely not going to be a factor?

Guys, just to add to everything discussed here (and I GREATLY appreciate the discussion and brilliant advice thank you so much!), if lets say I were to sell my current setup and start completely from scratch, I would likely hold onto my RTX 3080 for another year or so. Everything else would be new. Could you recommend a brand new build including everything other than the OS? I think I would consider something like the following:

13900k/ks
Water cooling - Corsair?
Seagate Firecuda 530 2TB x2 / 4TB
HX1000i or similar PSU?
Corsair DDR5 5600mhz ram - apparently 13 gen intel doesn't benefit from any higher ram speed than this?
Using my RTX 3080 gpu
Corsair 5000 case?

Budget would be £1700 - 2000 max

I think I'm leaning more towards Intel but open to the AMD suggestions too. I have no idea if this would really be worth it, but I'm thinking of selling some stuff and I'm curious. What would you do? if I did start from scratch, what would be a nice easy case to work in? I would LOVE to have something with a window as the Phantom never did and I can't find an option anywhere to buy one.

And just to reiterate, main pc use purpose is gaming at 3440x1440p res on Alienware 34" monitor, I'd ideally like to get 120fps at Ultra or High settings. And regular Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop work.

Thanks again!

then that is where we differ then :)
i personally would rather try out older components first and only upgrade if i had the need to

I’m not sure what you want to differ over TBH. I have no experience with this particular Alpenfohn but I do with others, but not this. I have found previously good performing HSF not doing so well with the latest CPU’s though.

@Arthaei
13900k build
(unfortunately a lot of parts are on pre-order)
i don't know how much RAM you will use in PS/LR - if you're semi-professional and deal with large file sizes then 64gb of 5600mhz RAM is preferred over 32gb of 6000mhz RAM
you will need a 360mm aio to cool the beast especially if you're going to load the 13900k flat out - arctic liquid freezer 2 is one of the best performing aios around
might as well get a newer ATX3/PCIE5 PSU as your next gpu purchase will likely use this connector

at the moment, intel 13900k is ~10% faster than ryzen 7950x with PS/LR
however, depending on how likely you are to upgrade, ryzen am5 provides a better CPU upgrade path and later gen ryzens may prove faster than the 13900k
the 13900k is likely the best you're going to get on the z790 platform and an upgrade will mean a full cpu/mobo swap out (rumours of a raptor lake refresh but these are just rumours for now, so large grain of salt needed)

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,731.86 (includes delivery: £11.98)

Thank you Tamzzy!! this looks rather tasty.. what sort of overclock could I expect to get on this (if it's even worth doing it thesedays!). Also for mounting the cooler, would this ideally go on the top? how easy is it? also would I need anymore fans anywhere and lastly how hard is it to control them? on my project pc, I've got x2 120mm's plugged into a splitter into the 4pin of the mboard and I can't control them even through the bios. It's good to know if I got stuck with the build I can jump on here and get advice though, thank you once again.
