Upgrade 9yr old Titan Scythe 4770k OC PC

what sort of overclock could I expect to get on this (if it's even worth doing it thesedays!).
Probably not worth it if you rely on the computer for work and need 100% guaranteed stability.
In general would be looking at 5.6/5.7ghz p-core but this will come at a heavy power penalty (~320w).

Also for mounting the cooler, would this ideally go on the top? how easy is it?
Correct, top. Easy. Big case (specced as you are used to the phantom enthusiast - normally I would've suggested a smaller case)

also would I need anymore fans anywhere
Case will have 4 fans - 3 front, 1 rear. That's all you need (+ 3 fans from the aio)

how hard is it to control them?
All from the motherboard. Aio pump goes to aio header. 3x aio fans have daisy chains in-built and goes to the CPU fan header.
Mobo has 6x case fan headers - you will only need 4. So plenty to go around.

It's good to know if I got stuck with the build I can jump on here and get advice though, thank you once again.
Someone will always be around to help :)

Mmm. I'm finalising funds before I leap for one of the builds. I'm tempted to swap the 3080 for a 4070 but it looks like there really isn't much point other than the lower power benefits and potential better future support. Would it be worth it to push extra frames with frame generation DLSS3? I don't know enough about them really. I really need to focus on the new build anyway and look at gpu stuff later to be honest regardless.

Is it the same price?

TPU seemed to like the dual, don't know about t'other one:

"ASUS has engineered a great little card with the "Dual." With three slots it's thicker than other cards, but shorter at the same time, which will be useful for many cases. Multi-GPU is dead, so a triple-slot card will be easy to fit anyway. Temperatures are super low on the ASUS Dual, 61°C is the lowest temperature we've seen today. Noise levels are still good, just 31 dBA is a little bit quieter than the Founders Edition, the MSI Ventus is still quieter. ASUS is the only vendor to implement a dual BIOS on their MSRP card, offering you a "quiet" BIOS option. Once that is enabled, noise levels drop to only 25.2 dBA, which is whisper-quiet. It's amazing how a card that runs 1440p and 4K, with ray tracing can be so quiet. If you stand right next to it, in a quiet room, with everything turned off, you can barely hear it. Our apples-to-apples cooler test reveals that the ASUS Dual is a good cooler, despite its fairly simple design. Only the MSI Ventus thermal solution is a tiny bit more powerful."

Mmm. Unsure. Always had the Gigabyte cards. Need more info!

I'm wondering now about the RX 7900 XT... if I go with the 13900k build we discussed, would that be better compared to the 4070 and RTX 3080 for the ram for future proofing at £749...?

I'm totally lost by page 3 of a thread, I'm afraid. You're gaming at 1440p UW? You do frequent Photoshop and Lightroom work? You're referring to @tamzzy 's 13900K build on page 2?

think OP is all over the place here. very hard to provide sound advice when the goalposts keep changing.

:D I can't remember anything by page three anyway, tbh, but I think it would help if the OP could re-state the usage and the budget again so we can do a re-spec to make sure the build is balanced right. On the face of it, pairing a 13900K with a 4070 seems like an odd choice for a primary gaming system, but for a CPU-heavy workstation with secondary gaming, then sure, it would work.

For gaming it'll definitely be more futurepoof with 30% more raster performance and 20gb of vram, rumours are that next gen games will be using over 12gb vram within the next year or two even at 1440p.

Sorry  So basically I was originally looking to upgrade my current machine as I have current pc and also a project pc. I’ve since found out different family members are happy to buy both off me, hence I think I’m shifting more now to let’s start from scratch… the £1700 budget you guys linked was fine, but the 4070 release has confused me as the prices are not far off the price of my rtx3080 second hand, that’s what’s got me thinking about selling that now also. Time moves on so quick and I was an idiot buying that gpu during lockdown if I’m honest.

I’m happy with my monitor so yes Ill stay gaming at 1440p, just debating the gpu situation as a separate issue really but I think I’m the next week or two I’ll get all the other components listed if that is still the best for that price point.

I’m still not completely discounting the £800 budget build either, but it’s mighty tempting to start from scratch now, particularly as it’s been 9 years since I had a new machine!!

A new spec for 1440p gaming + photoshop/lightroom with a £1700 all-in budget.

What were you thinking with the 3080? Sell it and get a new card for a warranty? If it was me, I think I'd just keep it until something more interesting comes along, but I still included a 4070.

I haven't double checked the 240mm Arctic AIO fits in the case, I couldn't find a thickness (of the rad/fans) restriction.

@Arthaei
13900k build
(unfortunately a lot of parts are on pre-order)
i don't know how much RAM you will use in PS/LR - if you're semi-professional and deal with large file sizes then 64gb of 5600mhz RAM is preferred over 32gb of 6000mhz RAM
you will need a 360mm aio to cool the beast especially if you're going to load the 13900k flat out - arctic liquid freezer 2 is one of the best performing aios around
might as well get a newer ATX3/PCIE5 PSU as your next gpu purchase will likely use this connector

at the moment, intel 13900k is ~10% faster than ryzen 7950x with PS/LR
however, depending on how likely you are to upgrade, ryzen am5 provides a better CPU upgrade path and later gen ryzens may prove faster than the 13900k
the 13900k is likely the best you're going to get on the z790 platform and an upgrade will mean a full cpu/mobo swap out (rumours of a raptor lake refresh but these are just rumours for now, so large grain of salt needed)

Hi Tamzzy, Tetras and everyone that has advised me on this thread (and also put up with all my chaotic questions!). I think I am going to proceed with the above build combined with an RTX 4070ti and swapping the ssd to a Firecuda 530 4TB (for more space for games and photography storage). After much research I even considered a 4090 and realised that a 4070ti is going to still give me about 160fps or higher ultra quality at the res I play at (3440x1440p), and that will be my target frame rate as I'm hoping to upgrade my screen to the Alienware OLED AW3423dwf in near future also which runs at 165hz refresh rate. I imagine I will keep this build for at least the next 5 years, probably only swapping out the gpu once or twice.

I'm unsure of wait times on some of the bits: psu, mboard, aio cooler but I think a few weeks wait will be worth it..

Are there any other tweaks you'd suggest to this build?

Thank you so much!

@tamzzy - I've picked up some items for the build - is the Fury Beast kit still recommended? only I noticed there's a 6000mhz variant they manufacture also. Would there be any difference in conjunction with the msi motherboard? - I'm also thinking I might just pickup the Samsung 990 Pro 2tb drive now that the firmware seems to have fixed the degredation issues. Is there anything else you'd tweak with this build? Thank you! Also @Tetras thanks for your help!

Budget went out the window as I sold some old stuff - already picked up the psu and cooler - so I've got 2.7k left to spend on the remaining bits!! Think I'll stick with 13900k/mboard/Phanteks G500 case/PSU/Cooler. So it's just which ram, ssd and gpu to pick now.
