US Open 2021

At least she just happened to be in the city when it happened and being a young lady, it wouldn't surprise me if she had an interest in fashion???

But what the **** is Lewis Hamilton doing there looking like this? :D

edit: am I gender stereotyping in 2021... oh dear. :p
She received a short notice invite as a media celebrity, especially in New York. She was all over the morning shows in the US the day after she won, it was quite the news cycle for her.

What do you think Djokovic would stand to gain from match fixing?

He's chasing things money can't buy. Sporting immortality that won't be matched by Federer/Nadal and unlikely anyone else in the future. It's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard and the accusation is coming from his number one fan on these forums. :p

Why all the hate for Novax?

You clearly have no respect for him using that name. I'm not a fan, I'm extremely childish but not even I've stooped that low.

edit: having seen the post below, I think you were being saracastic. You got me...

I really did skip over this bit which couldn't possibly be sincere

great personality and attitude

He is a amazing player with a great personality and attitude. I am not sure why many here seem to dislike him?

Is it a case that because his so good, people like to hate? Similar to hating on practically any other great sports person like Lewis Hamilton etc etc?

Come now, people don't dislike celebrities because they are at the top, they dislike them because they are knobs in most cases. Maybe you are being sarcastic? Not sure.

People disliked Schumacher because he was an arrogant ***** and behaved like one.

People dislike Hamilton because he dresses like a prat, likes to preach to people about issues that he is actively contributing to and generally comes across as a bit of a tit.

People dislike Djokovic because he would happily cheat to win, is anti-vax and a bit of an idiot.

For every person that people dislike who is "at the top" there are plenty of others that most people love. Its nothing to do with their success, its almost always to do with their personalities and actions.

Yes, absolutely. I'm not denying corruption in tennis in general. But Djokovic is a man who has spent a career trying to surpass Federer and Nadal, and who was on the cusp of that and a calendar grand slam. He's won more prize money than any player in history, not to mention his sponsorships.

The explanations for his defeat are:
1/ He felt the pressure and had an off day
2/ He threw away what is probably his only chance of the calendar grand slam in addition to his first chance to surpass Nadal and Federer for a small amount of money (relative to his fortune)

In the absence of pretty compelling evidence to the contrary, 1 seems rather more likely.

I'm not wanting to comment specifically on Djokovic in this instance, tbh.

It seems crazy to me that any top-level player would risk throwing everything away just to get a little richer.

But, if tennis is corrupt, just how far does the corruption go exactly?

Novak is a multi-millionaire, he’s likely made $50m or more over his career, his estimated net worth is $220m. How much money do you think these bookmakers are offering players like him to throw a match? Offering a player with a ranking of 200+ $10k to throw is a big deal. Novak gets $10k a day in endorsements. Probably.

IIRC, the on screen graphics during the final said Djokovic has won over $150m in prize money over his career. Obviously they won't show his earnings from sponsorships but it will dwarf that amount. Too lazy to check it out. :p

It seems the case though. any great athlete gets hated it seems.

NO one is perfect. Im sure there are other f1 drivers who are idiots but never get a mentioned and Djokovic is not the only tennis player to cheat to win or a anti vax or a idiot.

BUt yet its only him that gets mentioned and everyone else a prince/angel?

Come on, Djokovic, Hamitlon etc are all humans, ie flawed and so long as they are not doing anything actual harmful/illegal like raping someone etc then why hate on someone for common minor little things such as the way someone dresses(lol) or if they are a ant vaccine person(again LOL and im a vaccinated person)

Are we going to start hating on Emma once she starts becoming great and hate her because her favourite colour is red or some nonsense like that?

Djokovic has a much higher profile than almost any other tennis player and was in the news quite a few times for his anti-vax ********. Thats why there appears to so much hate. No one gives a crap about the number 246th mens seed. He can be as much of an idiot as he wants because hes a nobody.

But yet its only him that gets mentioned and everyone else a prince/angel?

When Murray was coming up to his peak plenty of people said he was dour etc. No one cares anymore. Everyone loves Federer and most people really like Nadal. Thats the 3 best tennis players ever and only one of them is considered a pillock so its natural he gets the abuse.

I mean, being anti-vax and a world wide celebrity and spouting your crap is highly dangerous and I'm sure will have indirectly led to some deaths so I'm not sure its completely innocuous. I think the problem is that you think people care far more than they do. If someone says to me "what do you think of Hamilton" or we are discussing him I might say "I think the man is a *****" but thats as far as it goes. I don't really care. I don't think about him beyond those fleeting moments and I would wager that 99% of the people who like or dislike him are the same.

We all have opinions on things that are no entirely based on fact and we have fairly strong opinions on stuff that doesn't matter and that we don't fundamentally care about.

Are we going to start hating on Emma once she starts becoming great and hate her because her favourite colour is red or some nonsense like that?

I doubt it. For every celebrity that is "hated on" there are dozens if not hundreds that are not. Perhaps those people are just the nobs of the celebrity world. You can almost always point to why people think person X is a ****.

Dave down the pub who everyone thinks is an idiot might have 10 people saying hes an idiot. Djokovic is known to a few more people so if he acts like an idiot there will be more than a few people calling him one.

The thing is that I watched the match and saw some very strange moments when he literally stopped chasing the ball. He didn't give the best of him and it was quite literally obvious.

Also, there is a deep psychology game in that, too.
The US Open is his second worst Grand Slam, only better than the clay which he is not a specialist to play on.

How would you explain last year's ban from the US Open?

Because he is very happy to play in New York?
Or he was angry because of something else.
Maybe he can't forgive that the Americans bombed his home Serbia 21 years ago?!

Or maybe he's just burned out as we saw in Tokyo and also suffering under the weight of expectation of a calendar year grand slam. He gave his best no doubt about that but everyone has physical limits and he reached his this tournament and at the Olympics.

It's very possible he's carrying an injury of some sort too.

Not everything needs to be some conspiracy. The chance of the men's final between the world number 1 and 2 being fixed is 0. There's just no incentive.

Or he just got beat from the better player on the day. It’s not as if he’s won every slam final he’s been in.

He didn't but he is in the best form right now. With further assistance from the absence of Murray, Nadal, Federer, Thiem, Wawrinka.

I don't believe it. This is so much routine and he has explicitly stated multiple times that there is no expectation overload because he plays match after match. He doesn't look into distant perspective.

But he has incentive to prove the crowd wrong for hating Russia and booing their player. That's 100% certain.

Come on, he even points with the finger at people in the stands...

Why would him deliberately losing the final of a slam constitute revenge for what happened in Serbia?

I watched the final as well. He looked mentally and physically drained. It happens.

Doesn’t really matter if you believe it or not, you’re living in a fantasy world.

So, you agree that he didn't give the best of him. The question is was it intentional, most probably yes.

This was his best chance to improve the record of Federer and Nadal.

Next year he will be older, more players will get better and he will lose more matches.

I saw happiness in him that he gets beaten. No normal competitive sports player behaves like this.
Especially when the fortnight before he said that he would treat the match "as the last of his carreer".
How did he prepare for this loss, then?

Is he going to give up with a loss?
