VA vs IPS - difference THAT big?

As far as monitors go, I always thought VA was the happy medium between IPS for its gorgeous colors and a TN for its fast refresh rate and low input lag.

I just picked up a 144Hz VA monitor with a native resolution of 1440p. It seems like the quality can range even with the same manufacturer but there's great reviews out there from channels like 'Hardware Unboxed' that go really deep into calibration and excellent comparisons.

Mine definitely required calibration but I'm really happy with the colors and correct blacks now. Shame about the viewing angles because at this size you can see the difference even when facing it dead on, now I see the benefit of a curve display.

I don't know where I personally sit with high refresh rate monitors for gaming. I understand it's buttery smooth and snappy but personally I never felt any issues with speed on my 60Hz and the general consensus seems like people notice much more when they go back to 60Hz from a higher refresh rate. I do question if you haven't been jaded with high refresh rates, would you be better buying a display with incredible colors and similar input lag without having to pay the heavy price of a really fast GPU + expensive cables + heavy load on the rig.

In case any one was curious:

blacksplotch.png

Is this typical for an IPS screen amongst those who've owned IPS screens?

It looks like you need to calibrate it. To be fair, my VA looked similar to this when watching movies but I found a 'black level' setting in the monitor and set it to high to solve the issue. Looks great gaming or watching films when the lights are on but here's how bad it looks when the lights are off.

Regular (Brightness = 100%)

Unrealistic (Brightness = 0%)

I didn't touch the settings really, even with brightness down to 40% there were occasions with splotchy blackness. It made playing Destiny 2 quite difficult in areas as it was borderline impossible to see.

The monitor also came with a certificate from Philips stating they'd claimed it at the factory - no idea how good the job was mind you...

For most people 60hz 1080p is fine. Just depends on budget, specs etc. And also preference. Someone may find the jump to 4k 60hz much nicer than say to 144hz etc.

I’m actually using my old TN 1080p 60hz at the minute while I await my 32” LG. Not as bad as I thought to be quite honest, it certainly is playable and enjoyable, even at 60hz although you can definitely notice the drop from 144hz. Don’t find the jump back to 1080p all that big of a deal either to be perfectly honest.

Same deal with the colours and viewing angles. Not something you can particularly notice in game and colour wise it actually copes quite well.

Which 32" LG did you select?

The 32gk850g which is the 1440 165hz gsync version.

coming over the next few days so will likely update my thoughts.

Only paid £400 for it which I’m pretty happy about. Is VA but does have some good reviews. I tend to play mostly on an evening now so wanted the high contrast and it seemed the best reviewed in that size range. Didn’t really want to risk an IPS and have to put up with the bleed and glow etc. Viewing angles I’m not too bothered about will be on a decent vesa arm so can be adjusted to an ideal position.

I have the Freesync variant, and am very happy with it.

Works with Gsync, contrast is outstanding, and I don't personally have any issues with smearing/ghosting, after a good number of hours on Borderlands 3 and Warframe.

Love the lack of IPS glow and there being no backlight bleed on any edges.

Just arrived about 1 hour ago and have been putting it through it’s paces.

I bought it 2nd hand (with just over a years warranty) and without knowledge you would have thought it was brand new. Really well packaged by the seller (monitor box even packaged). Seller has been excellent throughout too.

There is no ghosting I can notice in game and I’ve put it in some pretty demanding scenes. Maybe if you stood and moved around with face to the screen but so far excellent. I’ve had va before and it hasn’t been something I’m particularly bothered about anyway.

Viewing angles while sure not as good aren’t as bad as I was expecting for the large size, not something you really can notice in game either. 32” is amazing and certainly adds some immersion over 27” that’s for sure. Colours too are fine and I think once setup and calibrated will be even better. Missed the 165hz though god :D.

Also contrast is excellent as expected and so nice (what a difference it makes) not to have any IPS glow or bleed to deal with.

Overall very happy with it. Especially the amount paid and the specs. Certainly will be keeping this over the recently purchased xb271hu.

Growing up on CRT and Plasma a VA Panel is a must for me as I need good blacks and contrast ratio, ideally I would not use any LCD as I hate them (TV is Plasma was going OLED at launch but decided to hold off).

I got the LG 32UL950 4K HDR while I wait for my X35, the LG is a very nice monitor and highly recommend it to anyone wanting a 4K HDR monitor

That's funny because I purchased the Freesync variant too, LG 32GK650F-B, for £260 on sale brand new. It's hands down the best bang for buck monitor you can buy right now from an established manufacturer. I almost bought the Pixio 329 but there's reports of it overheating and it's hardly an established brand so I'm happy I didn't make that choice.

I'm also happy with it, initially I wasn't but after some calibration I was pretty surprised at the difference. It's just a shame I can't find a 'DisplayPort 1.2' cable that's between 35FT - 40FT long :(

Nearly £600 new so quite a bargain considering the like new condition. Just the gsync tax I guess :p. Great monitor though, don’t miss IPS one bit to be honest.

£260 is pretty insane though :).

Get a fibre optic cable. I have a 20m one and it runs just fine even at 3440x1440 120hz, no problems at 1440p 165hz. ATZEBE on amazon. From the reviews you have users running the 20m cables on a 4k 144hz monitor without any problem.

I have tried many cables as I have my pc a distance away for silence. These are the only type capable and well worth the price in my opinion. I have two one 20m hdmi for my 4k tv, one 20m dp for the monitor. Both work perfectly. Great quality and extremely thin too.

I agree, the fibre optic versions seem like my only option. I need a data rate of 14.7 Gbps for 1440p @ 144Hz so Display Port 1.2 cable or a fiber variant can provide that.

Unfortunately, the length is causing dramatic jumps in price. Anything above 11 Meters would fit but:
10 Meter fibre display port cable = £60
20 Meter fibre display port cable = £150

Can get a 20m 1.4 capable cable on amazon for £80.

Or a 15m for £2 cheaper :p

I have a question for you two lads. Now I have a displayport cable (thanks to Tyler!!!!!) I can use G-Sync for the first time but did you chose to activate it or leave the screen running at 144Hz?

I poured in a ton of research and it seems like G-Sync specifically prevents screen tearing by allowing the screen to adapt its refresh rate based on the frames per second being received. So it would add 6.9ms of input latency per frame lost on a 144Hz screen. However, that's just figures talking, did you personally notice any difference in gaming with it on or off?

Also Krooton, are you seeing better results with the monitor Freesync setting on 'Basic' or 'Extended'? It's my understanding the basic has a smaller FPS range than the extended but some systems bug out with extended so they offer both options.

@trentlad

I set up my monitor according to this so Extended freesync, but I am using the g-sync function and it seems fine (I have no point of reference as this is the first variable rate monitor I have ever used).

Keep in mind, my poor little laptop 1060 can't really manage more that 90FPS on Borderlands (1080p) and bounces between 50-65FPS when 1440p. Smooth when the frame rates drop though, which is part of the point.
