VARcical Decision

What’s the difference?

I don’t think we watch the same game. Because I see players surrounds the ref all the time.
Football players are idiots that's why, how many times do you see someone claiming handball when its clearly struck someone's chest for example.

Exactly, now if they are so sure…they can play their one and only token or shut up if the ref don’t give it.

And if the ref was fooled then the other team can challenge it.

The difference is your scenario requires a single person to make the judgement call on whether to challenge the refs decision or not. They can’t do that without input from the players involved. That’s going to take time and cause a totally unnecessary delay.
The only difference here is they have a card to play to get the ref to go to the monitor.
And there’s the crux of the problem - you’ve now got your captain having to stop and have a chinwag with the players involved to decide whether or not this one is the one where they produce their magic ‘card’ to give to the ref.

But in the heat of the moment the players could well believe it genuinely was a handball. So they spend their time convincing the captain ‘this is the one’ - only for it to be deemed accidental. They’ve now lost their chance to challenge the refs decision. Seriously dude how do you not see how bad an idea this is??

They have to trust each other, like from the first post, “are you sure it was handball?”

Turns to the ref “monitor ref!”

Unless the defender didn’t spot the handball, didn’t shout handball and ref didn’t see handball. And you don’t make a claim. Then what’s the difference to when there was no VAR?

Game keeps flowing.

That’s their problem for being impulsive and stupid. Play the card wisely.

Imagine there is no VAR at all, and now you have 1 or 2 life. See it as going up from no VAR rather down than from VAR.

As opposed to unlimited VAR check, unlimited pauses in the game, double refereeing, referee don’t make decision and wait for someone else upstairs to do it.

1 ref, 2 breaks.

But under the current implementation of the rules its utterly irrelevant if it struck someone's hand, its all about the referees subjective opinion on if it was deliberate or not. That's the issue, not var itself.

Not just handball, but fouls.

The issue I have mainly is the double referees here with VAR. and the term “clear and obvious” is ambiguous. At least the power here now lie with the players, and they have the power to get the same person to check his decision with replay. Not 2 guys in a room to check the referee’s work upstairs.

It’s the players who decides whether the ref made an error. The consequences of which they also have to live with themselves should the decision stick or change from the challenge of the original decision.

That’s nothing to do with it dude. A player could believe 100% they’ve had a ref call go against them. Doesn’t make it fact.

Then they can play their token. Then the ref will check. If it goes against them still then what’s the difference to no VAR at all or VAR turn over it at all? At least this way it is the same ref who makes the call. At least the fans in the stadium can see what is going on.

But it's the same with fouls, how many times have we seen 2 pretty much identical fouls where one results in a red and the other a yellow?

No not 2 guys in a room. Now you’ve half a dozen guys all yammering at their own captain on the pitch, who now has to decide if this is the time to play the magic card. Good luck getting that right.

Again, no not all.

if your idea is to improve the flow of the game. It just wouldn’t. It would cause mini pitch meetings constantly with the players and captain trying to work out if this is the call they should actually challenge.

i disagree, 1 token per 45mins per team only has 4 pauses per game max

There is no double checking with VAR and then ref.

This along limits the breaks, less breaks, better flow.

If you really want, 1 token for the entire game. Everything else the ref makes in real time stands. 2 tokens per game is definitely less breaks than unlimited.

That’s if they challenge the refs decision. There’ll be multiple times in the game outside of the actual challenge where the players will be wanting their captain to make the challenge. Everytime the captain will have to discuss with them the why’s and why nots.
As I said, there’ll be mini team meetings all over the pitch for every blow of the refs whistle!

No they won’t. Fans will be even more confused. ‘Why did they challenge that, we could see from up here it was legit’ - ‘why did they not challenge that….’ Etc etc.

Different kettle of fish, but yes, they surely will say that but that is more a tactics of the team. It’s almost like “why didn’t he play 4-4-2”

They better be quick about it and concentrate on the game and stop bickering or they will get battered 10-0.
