Vegas Hotels

Trying to figure something out for May 2011. First question, is it hot enough and are the pools all going to be open (4th visit but all previous have been July/Aug)?

Background.. 4 lads, all previous visits have been in the Stratosphere as we basically like to lounge around in the sun during the day and go out at night, Strat is excellent value, big pool lots of loungers etc. but this time we are set on something central. I've been to the Luxor before and really didn't rate it worth the extra over the Strat other than location. Would like something a bit 'wow' but at the same time don't want to blow crazy money.

Priorities are a good pool and location and things like breakfast/lunch can't be overly expensive. We usually try and spend very little during the day and have blow out sessions of meals/shows/clubs/gambling at night. I'm considering the following, thoughts?

Mirage (top of the list - location average, but looks a nice place) ~ $950
TI ~$800
Excalibur (kids? overly tacky?) ~$600 (refurb room)
Luxor ~$600
Mandalay Bay (location poor but hotel / pool wow!) ~$1200

I have written off the following - valid? NYNY (crowded) MGM (location, huge), Stratosphere (great value but too far out - infact nothing further out than Wynn)

Not really considered Venetian, Monte Carlo, Paris, Wynn, City Centre (assuming too expensive)

Argh! Decisions :) Any thoughts?

Any general advice on good nights out would be good too - after going to LAX I'm probably thinking that the american club scene isn't for us and that we will end up in 'ultra lounges' most of the time.

Best night out last year was Gaylord Indian :D -> Penn & Teller -> Voodoo Lounge, love it :D

with those deals I would go TI 1st and Mirage 2nd

look at Paris and Planet Hollywood

oh and pools are fine in May

also look at the Go rooms in the Flamingo

the hotel is not great but the Go rooms are funky and the pool is great

Fremont has a good "lounge" scene

Griffin
Beauty Bar
Downtown Cocktail Lounge
Don't tell Mamma
Goldiggers

on the strip Revolution in Mirage is good, maybe Ghost Bar too

£1k for 1 person ?

I would say that is real tight, even worse for a couple

I usually work in the region of £300 a day

we got married in vegas, so would have liked to have spent more. But after buying the wedding, rings, etc.. we were really tight. Still, we got cheap / free stuff by using coupons, vouchers etc.. or buying the show tickets from tix4less as opposed to buying full price from the box office.

Just means you have to spend your money more carefully, and pay full price for nothing :D

Vegas can be done on all sorts of budgets if you know what you are doing

congrats on wedding :)

We got married there too and will be back next month for our fifth anniversary

Rotty, know you recommended a gun range in one of your other Vegas advice threads, what was it? Fancy getting my gun off this year :D

The main reason was the guy booking it saw it in a movie and wanted to go ever since. I told him we can pop in but think he thought hotels were off limits to non guests :)

Probably the scene from 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' - I guess if he's a fan of solvent abuse you could recreate the scene from that movie but probs not a good idea - plus it is generally considered to be a complete dump.

looking to go back there in April but flights seem pretty steep, £667 return from Manchester with Virgin :(

When is the cheapest time to fly?

Christmas but that may not be much use

do you not have any VA miles ?

if you dont drop me the dates and I will check the miles plus money prices as it often works out chepaer to pay for miles and do this

Ermmm would have to check VA miles but if I did it's only a few thousand- only did one transatlantic trip with them and that was years ago so I guess they have expired.

I could do Christmas but missus couldn't (Very tempting!!) but really looking at a week any time from 2nd April - 9th April (Missus has to be back to work on 18 April

checked miles plus money and best I can find is £588 from Gatwick and nothing from Manchester

you have prob left it a bit late for these fares ( seriously ) :p

also with the Manc flight being new and only twice a week it will be busy and prices high
