Vegas Hotels

I've been strongly considering going to Vegas next year. Never been to America before and always thought about it, so I'm thinking its time to make it happen. Probably would want to go for 10 days or make a fortnight.

What hotel would you recommend for a first timer? Bear in mind:

1. I want something on the strip
2. I want something thats modern and fairly luxurious, but not ridiculously so. Anything more than $200 a night would be pushing my budget.
3. I dont drive, so would be relying either on public transport or waking, so something in the middle of the strip would probably be handier than something at either end, but I'd consider somewhere at the end if the hotel was good enough to justify the extra travel time up/down the strip.
4. I looooooove food, so a hotel with good resteraunts would be a plus.

I would recommend trying a few different hotels on the trip. If you don't drive it means that you can see attractions top, middle and bottom end with minimal walking.

With that in mind go for:

Encore (top end of strip)
Mandarin Oriental/Cosmopolitan/**** (middle) I deliberately haven't picked Bellagio as I find it too busy. People flock to it to see it and makes it packed!
Four Seasons/Mandalay Bay (bottom)

Cosmo certainly fits your bill. Understand what YSMN means re the Bellagio, it does attract a lot of non resident visitors but personally I really like staying there

Bloody hell! Just looked on a holiday booking website at the Cosmopolitan. For 2 weeks at the hotel, plus flight, in June 2014, would cost just over £3500...

Thats kinda more than I was hoping to pay, considering I'd need at least another £1000 for spending money..

Am I likely to get it cheaper than that? Maybe go for a different time of year? I wont even be able to put in a holiday request at work for next year till January, so strictly speaking I could go any point of the year.

you will need a load more than £1000 spends for 2 weeks in Vegas :p

was that £3500 for 2 of you ?

for 2 folks for 2 weeks in Cosmo with flights I would be looking at around £3-3.5k

for 1 person you are only going to save the cost of 1 flight, room will still cost same

Have a look at the "Go" rooms at the Flamingo

To be honest I still thought Planet Hollywood was great.

If it's your first trip to the USA don't waste the entire 2 weeks in Vegas, there is so much more to see. At least consider San Francisco as well.

Everytime we've been to Vegas we've stayed at the Bellagio, but have said if we wanted to do things a bit cheaper PH seemed ideal.

Still the great location and seemed nice enough inside!

Couldn't agree more, as much fun as I had in Vegas I can't imagine wanting to spend quite that much time there. There are some fantastic places along the west coast, I wish we had been able to spend a bit more time in SF and exploring the places we went through on the way down the PCH. Would almost be a crime not to head over to California!

It's usually significantly cheaper to fly to Los Angeles instead. Then not only do you pay less, you also avoid the total Zoo that is a direct flight from the UK to Vegas (its full of lads on stag dos) but you also get to do a road trip or through the Mojave desert too, which is cool.

Sounds awesome... assuming you can drive of course :(

I'm starting to think that 2 weeks in Vegas might be too much anyway. I think 10 days would be enough.

Unless you are really into gambling etc then personally I'd stick Vegas at 5 days max on a first trip to the USA. Vegas is great, I loved it - but found that 3 days there was sufficient. I then moved on to other fantastic places like San Francisco which are equally good if not better in other respects.

As you don't drive it makes things a tad more tricky but how about return flights to San Franciso, 3 nights in San Francisco, internal flight to Vegas,, 5-6 nighs in Vegas, internal fight back to San Francisco, some more time in SF and then fly back from there?

Once you've been there, done that and got the t-shirt USA wise then sure, maybe spending an entire 2 week holiday just in Las Vegas is good fun but with a blank canvas there is so much more to that area of the USA than just Las Vegas.

I'd agree with that Fox. If it's your first time in USA it's worth going to the other parts of California that are easily reached from Vegas.

In terms of length of time in Vegas, it depends what you want from your holiday. If you want a sightseeing holiday then yeah two weeks is way too long, you can 'do' Vegas in about 5 days. If you want a lazing by the pool in the daytime and doing things in the afternoon/evening then you can amuse yourself for two weeks no problem.
